Review of Girl I Need You - Heliconia by

Advantages: Heliconia combine guitar-driven melodies with intricate boy/girl vocal harmonies.
Disadvantages: Not many
...Girl I Need You was released on on Isolation in June 2003. The title track, underpinned by a simple keyboard motif and offset by off-kilter samples shows off the best part of Heliconia's intricate boy/girl vocal harmonies. Shapes in the Dark is all guitar and distorted vocals; powerful, effective. In another time and place this would have been a shoegazing classic in the Chapterhouse/Slowdive mould. Innerise — who has contributed a track to the Flunk remix album — takes the Heliconia sound in a very different direction in his remix of Girl I Need You, building a dark, brooding ambientscape around fragments of Heidi's vocals. Walking Without Moving combines haunting, chiming guitars with breathless vocal lines which give way to a soaring sound. All in all a strong debut EP from the south london band....

Review of Hunter - Life Once Lost (A) by

Advantages: Angry, Intense Heavy Metal
Disadvantages: Lacking in Vocal variation, all screaching
...Hunter immediately launches into opening track Rehashed with a mini drum roll followed by a heavy, churning guitar riff, immediately setting the scene for the rest of the album, and as the screechy vocals of Robert Meadows kick in, a surge of anger suddenly pumps through your speakers with this impressive into.
Needleman begins the way Rehashed finished, a blistering opening riff that you can really get into opens proceedings, followed by similar screechy vocals as seen in the opening track. In my view, this is the main down point of the album - there is little variation in the vocal style, it is mainly all shouting.
For me the next track, Vulture, stands out from the rest as being the strongest on the album. The usual grinding guitars open the song and after a short high pitched squeal from the guitar those aggressive vocals kick in...
