Advantages: Lovely music, tracks your toddler will recognise Disadvantages: Short, will annoy you after a while
This In The Night Garden business seems to have taken over my house somewhat. We have books, cuddly toys, puzzles, DVDs, sticker books and a new addition to our worryingly ever-growing collection, the In The Night Garden music CD. Harry is just in love with this bloomin' show, and especially its song which his Daddy and I have to sing on repeat when we put him to bed, so I thought investing in the CD might be a good idea!
As you probably know by now, In The Night Garden is the latest children's TV show to take the UK's toddler by storm, and is the obsession of 1-4 year olds across the country. You can buy hundreds of In The Night Garden products at the moment, and this CD is one of the newer additions to the ITNG product range, coming on the market in November, just in time for Christmas! A coincedence? I think not...

Advantages: Beautiful and atmospheric Disadvantages: Too short and not for everybody
of classical with occasionally a bit of folk and sometimes some (very) soft rock, all depending on the artist(s)/composer(s). This isn't necessarily what it is, but I feel it's a good way to give you an impression of what Celtic music is.

THE TRACKS
1 - James Galway & Phil Coulter - Callin Na Gruaige Baine - The intro to the album is a slow, calm, with quite strings and some calm but good singing. As the title suggests, this isn't in English but that adds to the effect. What you'll find is that some of the better tracks are those that don't have English lyrics ...
Advantages: Hear the songs and specially written score again! Sing along! Disadvantages: Songs separated from the score; you need to program CD player to relive experience.
, bunched together; these followed by the nine instrumental pieces, and then the final song THAT'S AMORE performed by James Marsden (and Variousartists). I must admit that my daughter certainly didn't seem to mind playing the CD as background music on "repeat all", listening with half an ear while decorating two birthday cakes and looking after 2 year old Abigail while we took her three boys to the swimming baths last Tuesday. It was still playing when we got home to collect the two of them, after swimming, to take everyone to McDonalds in Towcester for a double party for Reuben (6) and Zachary (8). She certainly appeared to have enjoyed it!
The problem was that I minded. I had wanted to re-live the musical, re-visualise the film while listening to the soundtrack, and as this CD was organised, it wasn't possible to do it. Of course ...

Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (5/1/97, p.50) - 4.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...a lot of music and sociology to love, study and comprehend....While much of this music is already gone from everyday life--forever--Alan Lomax ensured that it will never die. The oral tradition, even on CD, is still alive and well." Entertainment Weekly (4/25/97, p.72) - "...these performances--straight from the parlors, churches, and prisons of the Old South--are still essential listening for anyone interested in the roots of American popular music." - Rating: A
