Album Reviews: Alternative Press (p.186) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Channeling the spirits of the Caribbean and Motown alike to create some truly mellow magic..."
Advantages: Another promising release from a keen rock band. Disadvantages: My terrible review title. Someone suggest a better one...
.... It starts on a simple piano riff that varies and repeats during the song. Like Grand Unification pt. 2 on the last, this track (for me) is what the album is all about. It's got an amazingly catchy chorus and some lovely melodies. It's only flaw that I can see is suffering from something I will from now refer to as 'Fighstar-syndrome', the strange need for a quiet break down before the last leg. It really isn't done very well on this track. Apart from that it's amazing material, and remains one of my favourite tracks of the last few monthts. Big, doomish, apocalypse music.
Deathcar stands out as one of the heaviest tracks on the CD. At the beginning you hear the sounds of Charlie (lead) holding his breath under water then gasping for air, followed immediately by a sudden driving heavy-metal intro. The track bounces between normal...

Advantages: Beautiful Lyrics, Pure Unadulterated Sound, Perfect Songs Disadvantages: Sometimes Annoying Purposeful Background Hiss
...the characters that are sung about, the sweet situations they find themselves in, and feeling that somehow, when it all comes down to it, this record tells it as it is.
For example, the opener, "The Best Ever Death Metal Band Out Of Denton", tells the story of two guys who had been friends since they were yound, and formed a band, practicing twice a week in one of their bedrooms. And when one of them got sent to the school, where they told him he'd never be famous, they wrote lettters to each other developing plans to get even. The song is an honouring of teenagers with dreams everywhere, and its simple chords lend perfectly to Darnielle's story. Starting and ending with the tape hiss of their primitive...

Advantages: A good sampler to The Quo's extensive back catalogue Disadvantages: Quo fans will already have a few recordings of the "big ones"
...Although, Rossi & Parfitt, have been together for 40 years they are still producing great songs in the 21st century.
For anyone who likes a bit boggie and doesn't have an Quo in their collection, this is the one for you to dip in and out of 40 years of Status Quo, from their first hit "Pictures of Matchstick Men" through their hey days of "Caroline" and "Down Down" to their latest charts entries "Jam Side Down" and "You'll Come Round".
The Quo always ensure that there is be plenty for you "The Wanderer" to go "Rockin' All Over The World", "Again And Again" to "Whatever You Want". I
nstead of listening to those of knock them without hearing them, find out yourself - these 3 cord boggie meisters will get you up and rocking, more enjoyable than any exercise class!!...
