the early singles from this Belfast, N Ireland quartet--the barbed "Suspect Device", "Alternative Ulster", the gravel-gargling "At The Edge", et al. Jake Burns' outfit were frequently called "the Irish Clash", and the comparison was justified, at least in terms of the taut, explosive energy SLF generated live. But after 1980's polemic major label debutNobody's Heroesand its follow-up, the more sophisticatedGo For It, the band's artistic strength faded, leading to SLF's break-up in '83. Although they reformed a few years later (and have continued to release records since), releasing a new studio album (Hope Street) alongside a "Best Of" 16 years later still seems a slightly cynical move. Although single "Last Train From The Wasteland" is an optimistic look at Belfast's troubles, there's little else to recommend the band's present-day pallid powerpop fare here.--Everett True

Advantages: Tonnes of outstanding tracks Disadvantages: Their later stuff doesn't do it for me
...this two disc set contians all there punk hits (but is strangly missing Jonny Was?!?), the second disk contians their ska/blues/pop hits.
The first disk for me is by far the best and every song on it is great. Political lyrics with simple, fast chord progresions and some cracking slow solos thrown in makes for a great listen. Some people who are into mainstream pop with not be a fan of the vocials as the a bit flat but for me it works ... ...is a slow ska song all about racism and how it's not an excuse.
There are a few live track riddled over the 2 disks but you'll bearly tell the difference. The only reason I know they're there is because (live) is written next to every track that is live.
This album is worth owning if your just getting into SLF or if some-one has recomended them to you. Also great for avid fans that want all there best hits all on the ... more

Some people who are into mainstream pop with not be a fan of the vocials as the a bit flat but for me it works beautifully. The best tracks on this disk are 'tin soldiers', an anti army/war song and 'suspect device', a song against the use of explosives. I can't pick a bad song off this disk!
The second disk lets this CD down alot for me. The vocial are pritty much the same but the backing is alot let aggressive and fast. They also use other instroments like trombones in these tracks. Don't get me wrong, there are some great track on here still, none more so than 'doesn't make it alright'. This is a slow ska song all about racism and how it's not an excuse.

Advantages: Good old fashioned heavy / punk rock still belted out by the original and only SLF. Disadvantages: None - unless you consider being told off by your kids for the music being too loud as a problem.
...to my youth. All the good old songs are there from Alternative Ulster to Gotta Gettaway to Tin Soldier to Nobody's Hero. Of course they are all belted out in SLF's inimitable style and 'punk rock' is too poor a phrase to use to describe SLF. Their music and lyrics tear along at breakneck speed and of course their is the physical volume that these tracks deserve to be played at.
SLF's style shines through their "All the Best" with lyrics that intertwine ... ...punk energy and a method of getting their message across that SHOUTS honesty.
If you've never heard SLF, and even only remotely liked the Sex Pistols, et al, then SLF who were around in the late 70's and still going strong today will grab you by the throat and fuel a fanatsy of being young again. If only for an hour or two! Then once you know you like them, go out and find them live - www.slf.com - you won't regret it. ...

Advantages: Sustain and power chords to get the adrenaline pumping!!!!! Disadvantages: Your granny might not approve of all the lyrics...
If you were in a band you would want to start your set with "American Idiot". Simply-crafted, powerful chords and thumping drums - turn your CD player up and feel your heart flutter and your ribs vibrate...
Their best CD by a mile.... all sung and played with power and emotion. Older music fans will compare this with StiffLittleFingers "Inflammable Material", the same gritty, powerful guitars, passionate and gutsy vocals and thumping up-tempo beats. Yet it still feels different and fresh.
On top of that, Green Day show that they can vary the tempo and pluck the notes as well as thrash out the chords. Interesting 'concept' element to the CD too.
Look, let's be honest about this..... This is not a record for deep, probing analysis... don't sit there reading this... go out, buy it and turn it up loud... dance, shout, sing ...

Album Notes
Stiff Little Fingers: Jake Burns, Ali McMordie, Henry Cluney, Brian Faloon. Includes liner notes by Gordon Ogilvie. In their late '70s/early '80s heyday, Stiff Little Fingers were among the most clever and ferocious purveyors of melodic, message-oriented punk rock around. Combining teenage angst with a guttural rage at the British presence in Northern Ireland, they managed to put out several classically raw platters before their inevitable implosion (and eventual reunions with progressively fewer members, but that's another story). ALL THE BEST is a two-disc set that captures the choicest material from their first three indispensable records, plus some rarities and live tracks to boot. For those fans so parochial as to think that Irish music is exclusively of the Clancy Brothers and Chieftains variety, "Suspect Device" and "Nobody's Hero" will be a pleasant wake-up call. Also included are essential gems such as "Alternative Ulster," "Just Go For It," and even a live version of "White Christmas." ALL THE BEST is an excellent introduction to one of the best political punk bands of all time.
