Allegri/Leo/Scarlatti - Miserere Allegri/Leo/Scarlatti - Miserere
Those for whom the Allegri Miserere stands as a choral music icon will find this recording ... more
something of a shock. Getting on for a century
after Gregorio Allegri penned his masterpiece in
Rome in 1638, his work was emulated by Tommaso
Bai, maestro of the St Peter's Basilica choir. To
cut the story short, Bai's and Allegri's Misereres
were eventually melded into a composite work for
performance in the Sistine Chapel. A copy of this
extraordinary hybrid was preserved in the Vatican
archive after the papal choir was dissolved in
1870. From this, Hugh Keyte produced the
performing edition heard here, incorporating the
dramatic style and expression known to have been
employed--including seemingly bizarre portamenti
which at first seem like a joke. For some, this
musical mongrel may induce a mild queasiness--for
others it will be fascinating, caressed as it is
by the immaculate singing of the Ensemble William
Byrd. The show is stolen by soprano Catherine
Greuillet, who soars effortlessly into the
stratosphere. Too ravishing? Too feminine? The
hard-hearted may think so. The remaining Misereres
are pleasant enough excursions into unfamiliar
territory, but many will keep flicking back to the
Allegri/Bai to check they heard correctly.

Sublime music from this best of medieval music choirs
Review of Tallis Scholars - Silver: The Tallis Scholars' 25th Anniversary by quadruped

Advantages: A great way to get the best of the Tallis Scholars on one double CD
Disadvantages: are you joking?!

...Sheer delight! If you're already familiar with the work of the Tallis Scholars, then this 25th anniversary CD will need no recommendation from me at all. If not... then let me just say that this group of singers has not and will not be bettered at this kind of music. Their repertoire is mostly but not exclusively mediaeval, and this CD contains some of their best-known works, in particular their rendition of Allegri's Miserere, in my opinion by far the best version *ever* of this beatiful composition. The pure soprano voices render this piece achingly beautiful. If you don't already have an extensive Tallis Scholars collection, or - like me - want to start replacing your old vinyl collection with CDs, this is an excellent place to start.... Read review
