The Biggest Little Box of Classical Music
Review of A-Z of Classical Music by mikeydred

Advantages: An excellent introduction to Classical Music
Disadvantages: None

...and is completed by Bernd Alois Zimmerman. As well as details about the composer there are sections on the different types of music each composer produced (e.g. keyboard, opera, dance etc.). This is an excellent reference volume and full of lots of useful information. It would an excellent addition to any library or school music department. This is followed by a sixty page glossary of musical terms, which also includes musical instruments and styles. Ideal for awkward crossword clues. There is then a forty five page section on classical music used in films, ordered by film name. The book is completed by a list of illustrations followed by a page about the author. The package is worth buying for the book alone. ~~ The Music There are two CDs , arranged in chronological order , giving a good representation of classical music drawn from the Naxos... Read review

The best solo playing you may ever hear
Review of Inveroran - Stuart Liddell by dmilligan935

Advantages: Absolute briallian solo playing
Disadvantages: Some acompliment would sound nice with some of the tracks.

...Stuart liddell has to be one of the best pipers in the world today. Stuart plays with the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, which has won two world titles, he has performed with the band in concerts at the Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House, both of which have been placed on the CD. He is a phenomenal player and a great guy, and i had the pleasure of meeting him. The CD has won several awards in the piping scene as well as best "Solo Piping CD 2007" (Pipes and Drums Magazine). Very little pipers in the world has the accuracy, and the musicality of Stuart, and this comes through brilliantly on 'Inveroran'." A little break down of the tracks; The Centenary Jewel - A nice set of 2/4 marches to break into the cd and to start to realize how good this man really is. Inspector Donald Campbell Of Ness - A nice set of competition jigs... Read review

King Tuppence Good Deal Less Than Half A Sovereign
Review of Sullivan: Utopia Limited; Overtures by Newfloridian

Advantages: A sadly neglected Savoyard gem
Disadvantages: You'll be hard pressed to find it

...The operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan are much loved and treasured musical gems from a bygone era. They remain as popular now as they ever were when written over a century ago - as can be seen by the clamour for tickets, the enthusiasm of audiences and the dedication of amateur societies in London, the provinces and around the world. Themes from these operas still have the effect of getting toes tapping and promoting whistling whenever they are played. Coming from the twilight years of the partnership “Utopia Limited” was performed in London in 1894. After that initial run it was confined to the archives. Indeed the sleeve notes to this CD album confirm that there had been no further professional performances of this opera until 1975 when the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company revived it for their Centenary Season at the Savoy Theatre. I came... Read review
