harmonic ingenuity to find new possibilities in his own works or standards while touching on the wellsprings of the blues and early jazz piano styles. Those gifts were never more apparent than in his whimsical and inspired solo performances, like this one from 1959. In addition to the usual fare, Monk could always reach into a treasure trove of pop songs others had forgotten. Here he makes original music out of the ancient and ephemeral "There's Danger in Your Eyes, Cherie," and he manages to do it on two separate takes.--Stuart Broomer

Advantages: Intimate, excellent recording of the master of jazz piano alone doing what he does best. Disadvantages: There's just not enough of it.
TheloniousMonk is unquestionably one of the greatest musicians of the last century. Joyous, wild, insane, romantic, ecstatic, otherwordly, desperate, monumental - and that's just his facial expressions. There are musicians who play their instruments, then there are musicians who just play, the instrument and the musician each being and becoming each other's instrument. Monk is one of these, and you won't find a better example of his greatness than on this record. Recorded in just a few days, every track here sounds like it burst out the sticky centre of a donut the size of the galaxy at the beginning of time, imploding with wonderous uncontrollably joy at the very fact of existence. The recordings themselves are so crisp and balanced that you can hear Monk humming and tapping along as he plays the piano with his whole body, somehow ...
Advantages: Got to see alot in a short space of time Disadvantages: Slightly expensive. Mostly on the bus

We booked out tour in out hotel, which included a transfer bus to our tour. The tour started in Fisherman's Wharf, which we drove through seeing the unique little restaurants, which was buzzing with people. Then we drove through Chinatown and the financial district.
A short stop at Mission Dolores was next where we stopped for food. It was a Catholic mission church, which you ...
Advantages: Cheap, clean and location, location, location! Disadvantages: old-fashioned, elevator from hell
'll find the so-called Tenderloin- a place where you wouldn't want to be found dead, but probably might ifyou were to walk there alone at night. Ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but trust me: it is not the place to flaunt your expensive camera at night! Unless you really want to get rid of it, that is?
However, walk towards city centre and you'll be in the heart of SanFranciscoin less than 10 minutes!
First impression
The hotel looks a bit run down at first, although that might have changed by now, given the amount of construction work that was happening during my stay. Luckily, I had to get up pretty early anyway, so this didn't really bother me.
The lobby is pretty small, containing a couple of computers for free internet access. Well, that is if you are patientenough to get these boys running, as they seem to be from ...

Album Notes
Solo performer: Thelonious Monk (piano). Recorded live at Fugazi Hall, San Francisco, California on October 21 & 22, 1959. Originally released on Riverside (1158). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Digitally remastered by Danny Kopelson (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Just as the title promises, this 1959 session features ten solo piano pieces by one of jazz's quirkiest geniuses. The program alternates between originals, including some of his most famous and enduring works ("Blue Monk," "Ruby, My Dear," "Round Lights," "Bluehawk," "Pannonica," and "Reflections") and typically idiosyncratic reinterpretations of pop songs both standard (Irving Berlin's "Remember") and obscure ("There's Danger in Your Eyes, Cherie," included in two takes). Part of Monk's genius is that he never makes a distinction between standards, obscurities and originals, and treats every song as equally important vehicles for self-expression. His style on this album, unique and playfully exploratory, parades his artistry in its purest form, and as such is to be treasured.
