Album Reviews: Down Beat (4/98, p.44) - 3 1/2 stars (out of 5) - "...a recording that feels like a bootleg, but plays like the good recording it is....this trio is a nice reminder that...West Coast jazz...is alive and well....with this album, these guys bring new meaning to the words 'Alone Together.'"
Advantages: a true avant garde jazz trio Disadvantages: maybe too avant garde in some instances
...When we talk about modern jazz piano trios names like bradmehldau and esbjorn svensson quickly emerge to our minds. But no matter how good the former musicians and their trios are, nevertheless they still have a strong influence by artists like bill evans, keith jarrett and even Chick Corea. In the case of the Bad plus however, we can talk about a new powerful almost punk attitude towards piano trios. Imagine the virtuosity of jazz musicians combined with avant grade innovation and high volumed tunes, all combind in one. The original compositions sound so fresh, with all the rhythmic and harmonic complexity combined in a unique way. Trashy beats and excellent piano unisons create a some kind of trancedental atmosphere. And how about a cover of Nirvana's "smells like teen spirit" for jazz trio? Really interesting....

Advantages: Seminal record, hasn't dated at all Disadvantages: None
...in California) and contentment with their success in LA eventually meant that groups such as The Doors outshone them. Their failure to achieve real success brought in disillusion and this coupled with drug abuse ended the band. The age of Love was over before it had even started.
By the time "Forever Changes", billed as "the third coming of Love" was released it was clear that Love would either break through in a major way or break up.
The line -up was:
Arthur Lee: guitar and vocal
John Echols: guitar
Bryan Maclean: guitar and vocal
Ken Forssi: bass
Michael Stuart: percussion
"Alone Again Or" is an unusual, absolutely brilliant opener. An acoustic guitar leads onto Lee and his boys singing the best flamenco rock song to have been written ever, the brassy accompaniment is perfect and a horn solo complements this purposeful intro. The words...
