Alone Together (The American Debut Recordings) - Beryl Davis

...Kind of Blue might have received most of the acclaim but Milestones, the recorded debut of the Miles Davis Sextet, is in the same league. This remarkable super group (featuring Davis's trumpet, tenor-saxophonist John Coltrane, altoist Cannonball Adderley, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones) was arguably the greatest one Miles Davis ever led. "Two Bass Hit" features the two saxes trading off with fire and "Billy Boy" showcases the Red Garland trio (showing what they learned from Ahmad Jamal), but "Straight No Chaser" really demonstrates what a powerhouse band this was.... ...No Respect, which was originally released in 1989 on the old Island Records label and has recently been reissued on CD by Gott Records, was the debut from the band who took the name of their singer Davy Vain. It was considered something of a classic in the glam metal scene that was around in them days. As the name suggests, glam metal was another name for hard rock played by bands dripping in make up and carefully coiffered barnets. Most US glam bands of the time, including Pretty Boy Floyd, L A Guns and (spit) Motley Crue, were all nail varnish and hairspray, with little to offer in the music department, but here the twin guitars of Danny West and James Scott create a towering noise, as well as the obligatory "widdly-widdly oooh" that only American guitarists can play. ...Having just been crowned 'Best British Band' at the 2005 Kerrang Awards, I thought it about time to revisit an old favourite of mine, Funeral For A Friends' 2003 full length debut, Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation. Having surfaced on the British rock scene in early 2003, the Welsh rockers unleashed their debut full length on the public around October time, and it was quickly lapped up by both Q, and Kerrang magazine - both branding them the finest British rock outfit in some considerable time. Yet, as is generally the norm, one week you're the press' darlings, next you're the latest sell out in the mainstream scene; therefore Matt Davies and his bandmates did little to let said praise go to their heads - rather they concentrated on getting their music heard, and their live show up and running.
