Same old song
Review of Stardust (The Great American Songbook Vol.3) - Rod Stewart by fairenoughclough

Advantages: It's Rod stewart
Disadvantages: It's just the same as the last two

...Reviewing a Rod stewart album is probably one of the most difficult things in the world. Rod's voice is technically very poor, yet at his best he is the best thing since sliced bread. He has sung some of the best ballads of the last forty years in "Killing of Georgie", "You're in my heart", "First cut is the deepest" and "Handbags and gladrags" to name but four. The problem with Rod singing songs which have become American classics such as Blue Moon, Wonderful World, S'Wonderful, Night And Day and A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square is that we've heard them all sung and are familiar with them sung by better voices than Rod's. Guest stars such as Stevie Wonder, Bette Midler and Eric Clapton add novelty value but it ends there. The recent One night at the Albert Hall with Rod Stewart highlighted perfectly the gulf between Rod... Read review

Rod............... he just keeps coming back
Review of Stardust (The Great American Songbook Vol.3) - Rod Stewart by wmawston

Advantages: Great album for any mood
Disadvantages: none

...It's a little hard to take Rod Stewart seriously when, on the first track of this third installment in his Great American Songbook series, he sings ruefully about his love life being "lean" ("Embraceable You"). But otherwise, Stardust...Volume III is as note-for-note solid as its predecessors. A treat that's also a pleasant reminder of these songs' staying power. "S'Wonderful" settles on the ears winningly, and Stewart's scratchy yet harmonic voice is sheer class in "Isn't It Romantic" in a way that compels the average listener to reconsider thinking it dopey. In addition, the parade of high class superstars recruited to construct the album are brilliant, resulting in a couple of must-hear combinations. Eric Clapton delivers a rather un-Clapton-like guitar solo on "Blue Moon" and Stevie Wonder blows harp like he means it on "What... Read review

The undiscovered prog rock gem!
Review of Mountains - Steamhammer by WillyWumbo

Advantages: Hope to inspire others to discover this great band.
Disadvantages: Came out the same year as Led Zeppelin 3!

...(Bass/Vocals), Martin Pugh (Guitar), Kieran White (Vocals & Guitar) and the mighty Mick Bradley (Drums). This line-up completed the recording of 'Mountains' in 1970 and met with great reviews as did their great live performances. It has to be noted that unfortunately there was another great band around at this time who cast an enormous shadow - Led Zeppelin, a shadow hard to live in for a lot of bands! The track listing for Mountains is as follows: 1. I Wouldn't Have Thought 2. Riding On The L&N 3. Hold That Train 4. Levinia 5. Henry Lane 6. Leader Of The Ring 7. Walking Down The Road 8. Mountains There are some varied influences on this album from blues to Tolkien (Leader of the ring is based on the book by tolkien) and I guess you could say a whole list of people who pervaded the music scene back then. The stand out tracks are the 10... Read review
