prompted any major changes. On Alphabetical, their second attempt to revive the soft AM rockisms of a bygone era, the mood remains pretty much the same. To be fair, there is progression of sorts--songs are of a better quality and production values as slick as they come--but what are this enigmatic French band really all about? If you were trying to paint a descriptive picture, then their lead singer's voice would top your list of adjectives. Blended against crème fraîche harmonies and treated with subtle filters, it straddles each song with enough personality to carry the project, although you can't help feeling stronger melodies might have helped. For comparisons think Ben Folds Five, Hall & Oates, Eels even. There's even a hint of Dean Freidman in there somewhere, but that's no bad thing. Nothing here is going to set the charts alight, although in an ideal world "Everything Is Everything" is the sort of tune that should be trouncing its clichéd peers. Still, as the backdrop to a romantic rendezvous or a soundtrack to weekend introspection, this is well worth cocking an ear to. --Paul Tierney

Advantages: A great debut album. It sounds like Daft Punk! Disadvantages: Too short ?
...I'm not sure to be at the right opinion, But I write an opinion about Phoenix debut album United.
Phoenix is a french pop-electronic music band.
From the golden area Versailles-Paris. Yet their debut album, "United", sounds like Alex Gopher or Daft Punk's cd's.
Let me tell you their story.
Once upon a time around 1991 (too old!), Thomas Mars (vocals), Deck D'Arcy (bass) and Christian Mazzalai (guitar) were a garage band, performing in pubs and bars, playing covers. End of the first part!
Then in 1997 they hit on the Phoenix name with a punk rock song : "Party time" (re-mixed for United). Another member Laurent Broncowitz joined the band at this time.
About this album :
This Phoenix debut album sounds like a funky-romantic-electronic with slices of Van Halen's guitar and voices.
"Too young" is a funky heavy-metal-moog song...

Advantages: Great foot tapping sing-along tracks Disadvantages: /
...If you have seen the film Walk the Line starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon and loved the music in the film then you may want to buy the soundtrack as it is just as great. & even if you haven't seen the film but love great foot tapping country/ Rock 'n' Roll songs with some slower country/blues ballads mixed in then this may be for you too.
I thought the film was absolutely amazing and so went out and bought the soundtrack the very next day. I have loved Johnny Cash's music for a long time but do not have any of his cd's. One of the great aspects of the film was that the singers all did their own singing and nobody mimed a word. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon are so convincing as Johnny Cash and June Carter that when I put the cd on, it could almost be the real thing.
Tracks:
1. Get Rhythm - sung by Phoenix...

Advantages: Fresh and Powerful Disadvantages: I still don't see...
...Phoenix is a band from Versailles, France, formed 10 years ago and which (finally!) starts to know some success in its own country. And how they deserve it!
The album in question has been the number one in my top list of 2006, and is still high ranked this year. There is only 10 tracks but I dare to say, even after one year of listening, that every track is a pure marvel!
From the 1st to the 4th track, you will be transported by a loaded but harmonious collection of guitar, bass, battery and electronic sounds. These tracks are really swinging and joyful, this is not the kind of rock which makes you feel edgy.
From the 5th to 7th, you will breathe a bit listening to some cooler titles with melancholic accents.
The 8th is an interlude, very calm, relaxing, lasting 5 good minutes, the time to make your excitment grow while waiting...
