Those who know Luke Slater as a veteran and luminary of the techno scene may want to brace ... more
themselves for his latest album Alright on Top.
For this first release on mother label Mute, the
shaven-headed expressionist has teamed up with
vocalist Ricky Barrow (former Aloof frontman),
jumped headfirst onto the 80s gravy train and
produced an album that's full of, wait for
it...songs! Conjuring up images of Euro-style
asymmetrical hair-flicks, Alright On Top makes no
apologies for indulging in this current wave of
nostalgia that's sweeping the electronic music
world. And nor should he, since his project is a
shining example of how it should be done. Not just
a casual joining of retro-synth lines and
vocoders, his LP has Human League and New Order
written all over it. There are moments of iffy
euphoric tech-pop that induce involuntary
cringing, but for the most part this man-machine
hybrid is an inspiration. The way Slater has
switched between years of minimal techno and edgy
electro into this beautifully awkward revivalist
kitsch is mind-boggling, and just another example
of his unrivalled genius.--Paul Sullivan

A must-have album
Review of Homework - Daft Punk by chocoholic

Advantages: Innovative and original music
Disadvantages: None

...the album as: Cloaking pure jacking house with an array of kitch, pop culture imagery, this debut from two pretty-boy Parisians has a rawness and yet a sophistication that lifts it far beyond the realms of pure club soundtrack, while the roll-call of house greats on ‘Teachers’ shows Daft Punk know their roots. Tong definitely has his own way with words, but you can’t help but agree with his opinion. The ‘House greats’ on ‘Teachers’ include Luke Slater, DJ Hell, Jeff Mills, Tomka, and Pierre, although I’d categorise them as being more on the Techno side than House. The real beauty of this album is the fact that it works as a whole. Unlike a lot of albums it doesn’t rely on two or three songs to sell the album to you. I personally have a different favourite Daft Punk every week. Last week... Read review

70 Minutes of madness...
Review of Journeys By DJ Vol.8 - Coldcut by bergmcberg

Advantages: This is THE best DJ mix album I have ever heard
Disadvantages: If you dont like dance music you wont like it

...up a slice of nostalgia here with vocals lifed from some sort of old reggae tune. 20. Trumpet Riff - Raphael Corderos. This is an incidental, which plays over the top of "Blood vibes" and sets the scene. 21. Grace - Luke Slater's 7th plain. Another incidental 22. First time ever I saw your face - Joanna Law. Recently worked into a house track this version is far better, and provides the second opportunity for the listener to catch a breath and soak up the silky smooth vocals on offer. 23. Balthus bemused by colour - Harold Budd. An atmospheric swirly instrumental with Martin Luther king providing some weighty inspiration as his " I have a dream" speech is used. 24. Into the 90's - Photek. His 2nd appearance on the album, Photek summons up a summery slab of synthesiser sounds. 25. Bridge is over - BDP. KRS1 and DJ Scott la Roc. Hip hop... Read review
