Incorrect Practice almost sounding like some newly-discovered audio document. The Wells Trio are watercolouring a kind of ambient jazz, evoking locations in a way that's reminiscent of Eno's early experiments. The Falkirk-based Wells brushes all of the material himself (writing would seem like too much of a fixed description), combining acoustic piano with sampling techniques. He's joined by trumpeter Robert Henderson and guitarist/harmonica player Stevie Jackson, with Katrina and Stephen Pastel dropping by to turn the closing "D.A.D.E." into an ethereal pop miniature. The opening "Presentation Piece #1" revolves around a sample of Bill's own Octet, imparting a distant, looped quality. Half way in, Henderson's trumpet is augmented by three more horns, painting golden streaks that could be surfing straight from the West Coast in the 1950s. With its 70s vibe and 90s techniques, that's at least three decades encapsulated in nine minutes. Jackson's harmonica playing is closer to the delicate chandelier quality of Larry Adler's rather than the broken-bottle blues grit of, say, Kim Wilson. Many of these pieces act as dappled interludes, briefly setting a scene, then melting into another picture. --Martin Longley

Advantages: a true avant garde jazz trio Disadvantages: maybe too avant garde in some instances
...When we talk about modern jazz piano trios names like brad mehldau and esbjorn svensson quickly emerge to our minds. But no matter how good the former musicians and their trios are, nevertheless they still have a strong influence by artists like bill evans, keith jarrett and even Chick Corea. In the case of the Bad plus however, we can talk about a new powerful almost punk attitude towards piano trios. Imagine the virtuosity of jazz musicians combined with avant grade innovation and high volumed tunes, all combind in one. The original compositions sound so fresh, with all the rhythmic and harmonic complexity combined in a unique way. Trashy beats and excellent piano unisons create a some kind of trancedental atmosphere. And how about a cover of Nirvana's "smells like teen spirit" for jazz trio? Really interesting....

Advantages: Two outstanding peices of chamber music for an unusual combination of instruments Disadvantages: On the surface quite contrasting works, listener must be openminded
..., and Tuckwell lack the sensitivity and expression key to the music. The Danish Horn Trio have succeeded in producing a fine recording, which incorporates the many different moods and styles demanded from both these challenging works. This is particularly evident in the Adagio Mesto of the Op.40, where the controlled and expressive phrasing compliments the powerfully emotional lamento motif, thought to represent the death of Brahms's mother. Ligeti's Horn Trio is a Hommage à Brahms, also written after his mother's death and written very cleverly around the natural harmonics of the horn, which unfold throughout the work like an organic being. These complex effects are well executed by the horn player and mirrored by the other players. This is probably the most up to date recording and well worth listening to, a great coupling of these fascinating...

piano trio Review ofNow He Sings Now He Sobs [Remastered] - Chick Coreaby
kafouroutsos
Advantages: impressive neo bop piano work Disadvantages: not to good for people woho like the fusion corea stuff
...One of the classic neo bop avant garde jazz piano trios that emerged in the 60's. Chick Corea gives us with that record, a classic example of neo bop with intense improvisations and high rhythmically complex motives and patterns. The influence from hard bop is obvious all the way through, but also the latin flavour that is the trademark of Corea's paino style, is from times to times implied through the use of latin vamps. The drumming of Roy Haynes is very good as well. Some songs like "Now he sings now he sobs" have become jazz standards by the years. It is recommended to all jazz friends and needless to say this is a must for pianists. A good example of Corea's pre-fusion work....
