OK, this is the second in a series of my favourite pubs in York. The Hansom Cab is one of the favourites because its a bit different.
The Cab is located in York City Centre. If you are on Parliament Street, aim for the Disney Store (near HSBC and the fountain). If you head west from the Disney Store, towards Coney Street, the Hansom Cab is on your left. Its a pretty small opening, so look carefully. By the way, if you reach Coffee Republic you came too far. Its next the the Nut Store. Anyway, thats enough direction.
The primary benefit of the Cab is the beer. For bitter drinkers, like me, you can get a pint of the local bitter, Sam Smith's. For £1.30. Thats as cheap as it gets in York. My New Years Resolution this year is to give up smoking as I'm fed up of wasting my money on them. I have tried Niquitin lozenges in the past and have found they work well (it's my willpower that's usually lacking!) but my boyfriend came home with a SuperSmoker cigarette for us to try as another substitute.
What is it?
The SuperSmoker cigarette is called an alternative cigarette as it can be used as an aid to give up smoking or it can be "smoked" in places where it is banned. It works with a battery which you charge up and has an atomiser so when you inhale like with a normal cigarette the end glows up and you blow out smoke, but it's not actually smoke it's what they call damp. The manufacturer claims (taken from the leaflet):

Like all great pieces of art, on first listening Narrow Stairs makes you stop and take notice. Thirty seconds in and I'm relieved to hear that Death Cab have not resorted to pop riffs or drum patterns to push their way into the chart, rather continuing to create the brilliant alternative music that we love them for.
The stand-out track has to be the rhythmic and rather brave "I Will Possess Your Heart". An inspired yet simple bassline drives the track through over 8 minutes of sheer sonic joy, including the first four and a half minutes which have no more than bass, drums and piano. It works beautifully.
There are a couple of tracks (No Sunlight, Long Division) which definitely get you moving and seem perfect for alternative par-tays. My favourite track of the moment has to be "Your New Twin Sized Bed" - an addictive piece that ...
