In the last ten years or so, I have been a great lover of alternative rock. If I was pushed to reveal my two favourite bands, I would have to say , the foo fighters, and the red hot chili's. Green day, would probably weigh in at a close third.
The first of their albums that I heard was dookie, way back more years ago than I care to remember. From then, I Knew that they were destined for big things. They had a raw, punky sound, that was very different to anything that I had heard before. Vocally, iIwould have to say that they are somewhat limited. It is fine for what they do, but it cannot compete with the likes of Grohl, or Keidis.
American idiot, is the seventh album from green day, and their punk rock style has not changed. I suppose its a case of, if its not broken, then dont fix it. The Album itself is a harshly political affair. I dont claim to know much about the situation in America, but the title of the album itself says enough.
It has been correctly described before as a rock opera. The songs interact in places, and key lines are repeated at a few points. That, along with two songs in particular (Jesus of suburbia, and homecoming.), which are the guts of 10 minutes each makes the album tough going. Its not really an album that you can take one track off and listen to it. It tells a story, and as such you need to be free to listen to it in its entirity. Dont get me wrong, its catchy enough, and I do like it, but originally green day were all about short sharp songs. I would have to say that i think that is what they are best at. However, this album is good if you are already a fan. If, however you want to listen to them for the first time then i suggest going back to basics with the classic dookie that i started with all those years ago.
So, if you are a fan of earlier work, give this a go, if not then you should listen around. They are less mainstream than the foo's etc, and as such they are not to everyones taste. I would give this album 6/10. A bit of a let down, but it does have its positives. (Wake me up, when september ends being a particular favourite of mine.).
