Well like the title says this album really does wipe the floor with any album that has recently been released. Upon first glance you would expect that it had possible relevance to recent events in that great country we call America. Lets face it it is called Idiot America, and there is a picture of somebody holding a heart shaped hand grenade bleeding in someones hand. In a way it is a sort of dig more at the way the country is controlled by the media and men in expensive suits. I get the feeling that they are trying to say that they are no better if not worse than other smaller countrys. The rich line there pockets whilst the poor get poorer, and ultimately turn to drugs and general drug cultures to get by. As for the heart shaped bomb that is a reference to the song She Is A Rebel "And she is holding on my heart like a handgrenade" I feel that the "she" is supposed to be the Statue Of Liberty holding the grenade instead of her torch.
Now I know that as a fan of Green Day my opinions are swayed obviously toward them. But this is not just about great musical vibes with peaks like everest and dips like the valleys of Wales. The sheer contrast between songs simply blows you away, you just can't seem to pick a favourite that stands out from the others as they are all so good. I mean you could just go for the obvious and say "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" Or "American Idiot" But that would be cheating you just like them because you have heard them in the charts. This makes it mainstream the real work goes into the other songs, I mean just for example "Give Me Novocaine" this is a brilliant song It starts out really chilled and relaxed you can't help but sort of move with it (i'm doing it now listening to it) I love the way it starts "Take away the sensation inside. Bittersweet migrane in my head. It's like a throbbing toothache of the mind. I can't take this feeling anymore. Really simple words but you really understand how he feels and the music just backs up the highs and lows he feels.
For me this album almost borders on the verge of being a concept album with a sort of running theme throughout. Like the fact that they keep making reference throughout to a Saint Jimmy, he is described in the song "St Jimmy" as "The patron saint of denial with an angel face and a taste for suicidal cigarettes" Some of the songs seem almost interlinked as though it is one long song, there are two track on the album which actually have five parts to them like one long story. this just adds to the sheer listening pleasure and makes it simply addictive, it would be sheer crime to skip one single track. That would be like watching a film and then missin that all important bit which simply ruins the film for you.
I would really recommend that if this even in the slightest tickles your fancy, as I understand it is not everybodys cup of tea. I appreciate that this sort of grungie rock is not appealing to all, however I really do recommend that you maybe borrow it from a friend or the library and give it a try as you never know do you?
