...Wow what a great cd that i have purchased by William Orbit, it is called Pieces in a Modern Style and also includes his top ten hit Barber's Adagio for Strings, this is classical music as has never been heard before, it is inspiring and easy to listen to. He has come up with an album which is diverse and is essential listening for everyone. Pieces in a modern style and Barber's Adagio for strings are not the only cds that he has been involved with recently, he also produced another masterpiece with madonna's American Pie.... ...this is a ground breaking album and one which has deservedly won the mercury award. it mixes so many diverse genres that the album continually moves between differetn stlyes of music, reinventing itself along the way. most strikingly this album features some excellent guitar work. there is a strong spanish influence heard in the nylon string guitar sound, this is at times classical but then moves into a more south american style - effortlessly. furthermore there is some admirable work on the slide guitar, exposing the blues roots of the musicians. perhaps the most instantly recogniseable thing is the singer's distincive voice. it is as if he has been eating gravel all his life and it is lovely. buy the album - NOW... ...Think of Indian music and most young people in the UK will probably think of that background music you get in Indian restaurants whilst waiting for your curry. I recently became interested in Indian music and bought myself a sitar on a trip to Goa. The sitar is a stringed instrument with the body being made from a hollowed out pumpkin. It has two sets of strings. The upper seven strings are the ones that are plucked. The lower set of strings (about 11 of them) are strings which resonate when you play the upper set of strings. I went to see a blind Indian musician called Baluji Shrivastav recently. It was an interesting experience and going to see this type of music played live is highly recommended for a mystical, spiritual and relaxing experience.
