Is this album really so experimental? I have to ask, because with all the hype surrounding its release you'd be forgiven for thinking that perhaps Thom and the band had recorded it in an igloo with an acoustic hoover and a car alarm.
In my opinion it is just the next step in a constant evolution for one of the worlds most established bands. I cant' have been alone in thinking that the inclusion of an epic rock track was unlikely, and while the general vibe of Amnesiac is not commercial it is certainly not as inaccessible as some of its more obvious influences.
While there are a few moments which feel almost uncomfortably indulgent (Like Spinning Plates Backwards, Hunting Bears), there are some really great tracks. 'Knives Out' builds on the agitated feeling found on much of 'OK Computer', with Thom threatening to break out, before bringing the mood back down. 'You and whose Army' is for me the standout track. It is reminiscent of 'Climbing Up the Walls', with Thoms lyrics being bitterly accusational, while his vocals float serenely over the washed out soundscape, before crashing piano leads you into an outro which wouldn't be out of place on a spiritualized album.
So, commercial alt. rock/indie it might not be - still more Beck than Aphex Twin - closer to Gus Gus or Sigur Ros than Death in Vegas, but a cracking slo-burner of an album nonetheless
-------------------------------------------- UPDATE In response to a good question from 'epyman', just a quick note about where Radiohead are headed.
There is no doubt that a core group of fans will follow whatever territory the band stray onto. I know a lot of people who are only just getting into new Radiohead releases, especially those with a more dancey background than myself. I can imagine Radiohead moving in this direction, I don't think they'll ever be filling dancefloors, but the soundscapes they sculpt on Amnesiac, and their use of breaks (a la Tricky) suggest that they are under much less pressure to repeat their previous commercial success. The album really feels like a soundtrack to a film, and this kind of 'experience' (as opposed to a string of potential singles) will ensure its longevity. This is just a guess though - elements of their predessors can be found in the last three albums, and vice versa, but the transition from 'The Bends' to 'OK Computer' was a shock, if not an unpleasant one!

Hi. Radiohead are good, but I can't understand where they want to go ... do you know their final destination? - Byez

Good opinion, if maybe lacking some detail. Some advice from an experienced Ciaoer: throwing out one opinion after another without reading other people's work will quickly ruin your reputation among the Ciao commnunity, and people will avoid reading your opinions. I recommend that you limit yourself to onee or two reviews per day, and read other contributors inbetween. There's a lot to learn from other writers, and the reads on your own opinions will increase, too. No offence, just well meant advice. Cheers, Hans

Advantages: It's great! It's mad! It even has a couple of guitars on it... Disadvantages: Should have featured Humph and the band playing Mornington Crescent!
