Big Country

Advantages: Bryson's dry, stinging wit
Disadvantages: A little repetitive...I say, a little repetitive

I'm a fan of Bill Bryson. I like his dry, acerbic wit, and the way he bombards the reader with lots of dry facts yet manages to still keep it entertaining. The latest book of his I read (although not the latest written), was Notes from a Big Country. As I said, delivering trivial facts and figures in an amusing fashion is Bryson's forte and when those facts are about the land of his birth (USA), and are compared then related to his once adopted homeland (UK), I can visualize him virtually drooling at the prospect. And so, following his return to live in New England after 20-odd years domiciled in Olde England, when the editor of the British newspaper, The Mail on Sunday, asked him to write a weekly magazine column documenting his return home, you would imagine he'd leap at the chance. Actually, he kept complaining that he didn ...

Review of Notes from a Big Country - Bill Bryson

Never been to the States but Bill makes me feel like I have

Advantages: Bill's style of writing even makes "boring" subjects interesting
Disadvantages: none

I've been as far north as the Isle of Skye, as far west as Dublin, as far east as Durban and as far south as Cape Town, but I've never been to America. Yet, reading this book, Bill Bryson's descriptions of his return to his homeland after twenty years or so in Britain, I feel as though I could have been there with him. This book, so I read at the start, was a compilation of the first eighteen months of a weekly column Bill wrote for the Night and Day magazine that came with Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper. I don't think I ever read the original columns but I could read this book over and over again. In each chapter Bill tackles, in his own inimitable fashion, the complexities and problems, dilemmas, frustrations and emotional bits about going "home again". In fact his first column discusses precisely this - he has come back to his ...

Girls Aloud great live concert!

Advantages: Great songs, singing, dancing, pure entertainment!
Disadvantages: None

favourite part of the whole concert! Another change and the fantastic The Show is performed. Another favourite of mine, the girls do it ciomplete justice on stage with their vocals and dancing! Models follows, which was the theme song for the girls TV show Off The Record. Cheryls vocals are fab, and the girls clearly LOVE performing this one! I do love this song, so catchy and fresh! Another song from the Chemistry album is next, Racy Lacy. Some sexy dancing, undulating grundulating grinding hips and fab singing in thi one, not my fave song ever but very entertaining when performed live! The girls take another breather for I'll Stand By You, their charity single. Biology is reprised, and the girls tell everyone that the show is coming to an end. They don some sexy black cloaks to sing Wild Horses, another album track, but great! They ...
