EDITORS

To be honest I have never been a big fan of the Editors that was until I heard their latest singles on Radio 1. I really liked them and ended up humming along to them all day. I decided to take the chance and buy the album. It was on offer in Woolworths at £7.97 and placed in a prominent position so I didn't really have a choice.

I am glad to say that I have listened to the album, and what an album it is. I would definitely rate it up there with such bands as Muse, Coldplay and Embrace all of which I really enjoy listening to.

There is something strangely hypnotic about the album, I don't know if it's to do with the excellent lyrics, the sound of the instruments or the deep meaningful voice of lead singer Tom Smith. But every time I listen to this album I seem to drift away from all life's little problems and end up gazing out of my window feeling happy and relaxed. I find myself thinking that never before has an album made me feel like this for an extremely long time. We all need an album like this in our collections for those days when we just need to chill and remember how great life really is.

Vocals/Guitar: Tom Smith
Guitar: Chris Urbanowicz
Bass Guitar: Russell Teetch
Drums: Ed Lay

EDITORS - AN END HAS A START

TRACK 1: Smokers Outside the Hospital Door

This is the first track on the CD to be released as a single. It is a really good song to feature first on the album as it is what I would call a 'hands in the air, feel good festival classic'. It is embraced even further by the choir halfway through. The lyrics are very powerful and the music gives it that upbeat feel to it. It is definitely a 'festival classic' even if its raining it will still make people feel good

A feel good 9/10

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

TRACK 2: An End has a Start

This was the 2nd song to be released as a single. It is a great song to follow Smokers Outside the Hospital Door as this one is a lot more upbeat. This one is another festival classic that will have people dancing and maybe even air guitaring. The lyrics are great and the chorus is so catchy I find myself singing it hours after I have listened to it which to me is a good thing but probably not for the poor people around me ;-)

A catchy 10/10

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

TRACK 3: The Weight of the World

This song really is a powerful ballad. The lyrics are so strong and meaningful. I really cant imagine anyone else singing this song other than Tom Smith as his voice seems to magnify the beauty of this song and it is helped along greatly by the music itself. It is very similar to the style of Coldplay but to me is much better.

A beautiful 8/10

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

TRACK 4: Bones

This is a great song to follow track 3 because it picks you back up with its up-tempo music and lyrics. Possibly not a festival classic but one of the songs that will always go down well with the crowd at any live event. It's a really toe tappingly, head noddingly good song.

A toe tapping 7/10

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

TRACK 5: When Anger Shows

This song really is hauntingly beautiful, with the piano at the beginning, the gentle tapping of the drums and the soft but hypnotic voice of Tom Smith. You can feel it all coming together and building up for an explosive ending. This really is an excellent song which keeps you captivated all the way through

An hypnotic 8/10

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

TRACK 6: The Racing Rats

This is another good song, it is very up tempo and is another hands in the air festival classic. It will leave everyone feeling happy and wanting more, the lyrics and music are really good but it is enhanced more by the piano at the beginning. Toe Tappingly brilliant song.

A happy 7/10

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

TRACK 7: Push Your Head towards the Air

This is another ballad style song which again is performed beautifully by Tom Smith. Its not his beautiful voice but the military style drumming through the song that somehow makes the song something special, as it builds to an explosive but gentle ending. This is the sort of song that I can imagine people listening to when the sun is setting on a hot summers evening.

Drumroll….9/10

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~*~*~*~*~*

TRACK 8: Escape the Nest

This song reminds me of a Coldplay song in places, but that soon changes half way through as the tempo seems to pick up. Tom Smiths voice seems to be magnified as the song progresses to the ending. Somehow it still manages to keep me hooked and in a sort of 'dream state'. This is another live classic.

A lively 8/10

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

TRACK 9: Spiders

I really should not like this song due to its title. This song however is another hauntingly beautiful song with very powerful lyrics and uplifting music. The string arrangement throughout the song is what makes it special to me, as it gives it that edge. Only Tom Smith could sing this song, I don't think anyone else could pull it off in this way.

A powerful 8/10

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

TRACK 10: Well Worn Hand

WOW! What can I say about this song apart from this really is the most beautiful but powerful song I have ever heard. The lyrics are out of this world. What makes it even more beautiful is the fact that it is Tom Smith's voice combined with the sound of a piano and guitar playing softly in the background. It is at this point you really realise how hauntingly powerful Tom Smith's voice really is.

A haunting 10/10

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

SUMMARY

I would recommend this album as every song on this album is amazing in its own way and will have a different meaning to everyone. Tom Smith has a truly enchanting, powerful voice and is supported by an excellent team of musicians to produce a great album.

Overall I would give the album a captivating, hypnotic 10/10

Review of An End Has A Start - Editors by SpookyMoon

Advantages: Lyrically strong and musically very promising.
Disadvantages: It just isnt as great as their first album.Songs start firey but fizzle out too soon.

With their brilliant debut album The Back Room, it was clear that Editor's had the musical gravitas to craft another equelly compelling second album. But in my opinion, they didn't. For those of you that haven't heard Editor's then their sound is something like Interpol (vocally) and are definitely neo-post-punk musically. Guitars surge at the beginning of most songs aiming for something breathtakingly brilliant...trouble is that they never quite ...
...slump after the initial promise they offer. The lyrics are still thought provoking and moody, delivered perfectly by the direct and edgy vocals and the music is definitely better than most bands of a similar genre but for me it just doesn't quite cut the mustard. Especially when I am certain that this band could do so much better. But having said that, I am uncertain that most fans will agree with that. I think most people will be ok with this album, ... Brummies' Dark Second Coming

Advantages: Great guitar work once again. Epic at times
Disadvantages: Can't shake off those comparisons

...up with their sophomore effort, An End Has A Start. If you take that album title into consideration before listening to the record, you might think that Editors have taken a positive leap out of the murky puddles they have previously been stuck in. One listen of lead single and album opener Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors will send that thought cowering away. “Say goodbye to everyone you’ve ever known/You are never going to see them again” sings ...
...is the general affair on An End Has A Start. As I did earlier mention, Editors have sparked a lot of comparisons, and have at times been written off as copyists. Unfortunately for Editors, these claims are not a far cry from the truth. Present are Interpol’s rhythms, present are Coldplay’s church choirs and there is definitely a strong resemblance of Morrissey’s voice in Smith. Then again, there could hardly be anything wrong with taking a little ... Read review

End Has A Start, An [Digipak] - Editors
Review of An End Has A Start - Editors by clickysteve

Advantages: Not overlong at 10 tracks, gets better with each listen.
Disadvantages: Opening track not the strongest.

All the best records take a few listens (at least) to reveal their true nature. On first play this sounded like a typical 2nd album - longer tracks, less up-tempo. A month on this has to be my favourite CD of 2007. Nearly all the 10 tracks have resolved into fantastic, atmospheric (and not always gloomy!) tales of urban life and escape. Great tunes underpin the songs, with the now-trademark steepling guitar riffs standing out most in the choruses. ...
...found in the lyrics, most obviously in the title track, but tracks like Weight of the World and Escape The Nest are really uplifting, the latter also containing the finest moments on the album with its soaring, thrilling chorus. What a live track that promises to be... Recommended! Ok then, what about the digipak? Well if you like a glossy cardboard cover that's a bit too tall to fit into a CD rack then its for you! good band, another good album
Review of An End Has A Start - Editors by kel_marie

Advantages: good album - very easy to listen to
Disadvantages: very similar in style to the back room

...is a good song and an excellent choice for a single. The lyrics are very dark and meaningful, but he tune itself moves along nicely and the chorus is catchy enough to stop it from being too depressing. The other tracks on the album follow the same pattern, and arguably the same patter as the first album, Editors have not changed their sound at all for this latest offering, but why change something that works? Overall I enjoyed the first album and ...
...listen too as background music. Maybe it could be argued that the style isn't sophisticated compared to other bands or that they havent developed their sound at all from the first album, but in my opinion all that matters is that I enjoy listening to it and every time I put it on it still sounds great. Recommended :) ... Read review

Cheerfully depressive!
Review of An End Has A Start - Editors by Maylie

Advantages: Plenty of solid tracks with some substance and style
Disadvantages: Avoid some of the slower tracks

...'An End Has a Start' an album of depth that will become a favourite on your gramophone! Unlike the other comments on this site, I think the album does show some progress on their debut, and the sound is a little more mature. Perhaps one criticism is that the slower songs are not in the same league as some of the 'rockier' tracks but that's not to say that they are weak. I put the CD in the car six weeks ago and I'm still listening t o it solidly ... Read review

Review of Radio 1's Live Lounge Vol.2 - Various Artists by  theenglishviet

Advantages: Some very good covers
Disadvantages: Some not so good covers

...i'm afraid, and this is very much like the original. The vocalist just sounds a bit scratchy to me. 11. Editors – An End Has A Start I really like the Editors. They have a unique style and their accoustic version of their single works marvellously. Its a lot calmer than the single version. 12. Reverend & The Makers – Heavyweight Champion Of The World This song is a bit odd. Sometimes i like it, sometimes i don't. i think it depends on my mood. But the band do play live well and this is an example of that. 13. Jose Gonzalez – Heartbeats (Cover Track) I don't know why this song is on the cd to be honest. Sure its a great song, but he plays it as he always does. Its very pure, but so was his released single. You can tell he uses very little post processing. 14. Calvin Harris – Girls Certainly not... For their sophomore outing, AN END HAS A START, the U.K. indie-rock act Editors present another set of brooding, post-punk-inspired songs. While sonic similarities to Interpol remain undeniable, particularly in the dry vocal delivery of singer/guitarist Tom Smith, the Birmingham-based ensemble actually leans more towards the expansive sound of Bloc Party's second record, A WEEKEND IN THE CITY, here--not surprising since both albums share in-demand producer Jacknife Lee.
Given Lee's knack for pristine, guitar-heavy arrangements, Editors are able to cut loose with a grand aesthetic that is best embodied by the bold opening track, "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors," which takes cues from heralded shoegazer heroes Ride in its reverbed six-string squalls. Though Editors continue to wear their influences on their sleeves, Smith's earnest, if slightly detached, demeanor and the band's wire-tight tunes allow them to maintain their own identity.

Album Reviews: Uncut (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "When Editors go straight for the heart, often they strike their truest, and most resonant, chord."
