A BITTERSWEET SONGBOOK

Advantages: It's got the original; it's a bit of group history
Disadvantages: Whose biggest hits?

The opening song "Bittersweet Symphony" from the album "Urban Hymns" by The Verve was one of the most haunting sounds of 1997. It dominated the charts and airwaves that year and has continued to be used as background music in television programmes and advertisements, including those for Nike and Vauxhall. It is one of those tunes that you will surely have heard even if you cannot place its origin. The song became a bittersweet experience for its author Richard Ashcroft. The refrain he used was taken from, at that time, a little known arrangement of a Rolling Stones song (NOT the original) which had appeared on an album long since deleted from the catalogue. When it was first released in June 1966, "The Songbook" was the fourth in a series of albums recorded by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra. It was subtitled "Instrumental versions ...

A civilised Italian lunch

Advantages: Excellent surroundings; very good food and service
Disadvantages: No folded pizzas

sections you would expect to find in an Italian chain restaurant, with starters, pasta, oven pasta dishes, pizza, risotto, specialities and salads. Perhaps the only difference is that Prezzo also has a section for roast chicken dishes, although I understand that in their newer branches this is replaced by a section for calzone, or folded pizzas. On arrival the waitress had shown us the 'specials' board which featured just one main course: fusilli pasta with asparagus, mushrooms, roasted peppers and green pesto at £7.95. It sounded healthy and I hadn't had pesto for a long time, so I made that my choice. My son opted for traditional lasagne at £8.55, and his partner ordered a pizza with prosciutto ham, mushrooms, marinated olives, fresh rosemary, mozzarella and tomato at £7.95. I was pleased to see that a special knife with a serrated edge was ...

The Italian Job

Advantages: action and entertainment
Disadvantages: far cry from the origanal

the 21st century, as is the storyline and the hi tech gadgets that are used to pull off the bullion robbery. The new style Mini Cooper, (which aren't so mini anymore) are re-introduced, racing again through the sewers and the subway systems after bringing L.A. to a complete gridlock. There are a few similarities between the '69 movie and this remake but the main movie is totally different. I suppose if this movie was given a different title I may have enjoyed it more as I was constantly comparing it to the original, so this spoiled it slightly for me as I was totally lost as to why this was called 'the Italian Job'?? considering most of the car chases and the action was in Los Angeles?? Maybe they should have called it 'The L.A. Job? with the stuff we nicked from Italy'..?? Don't get me wrong, this is an action packed movie ...
