Advantages: PLAY'S WELL, LIGHT WEIGHT, GREAT SOUND Disadvantages: A LIITLE PRICEY
I recently went shopping for parts for the Gibson Les Paul I am building at home ,so I took some time to try some new Guitar models in Montreal,Canada. They had several Ernie Ball,s to choose from ,and I must say it handles really sweet, it weights a little more than seven pounds, consists of Schaller M6-IND locking tuners, vintage style tremolo bridge,EMG 85 humbucker in bridge position,EMG SLV custom single coils, double cutaway alder body, unbound rosewood fingerboard, and what i really like on a good quality ax is a 1 5/8" wide bone nut ,shielded control cavities, including a 5 bolt no-shift neck attachment this guitar really fits the body and is comfartable ,not like some other guitars that hurt your shoulder at the end of the night, they are a little pricey but they do deliver a beatiful sound from Jazz to Rock ...
Advantages: Great for smaller hands. Lightweight. Easy to play. Disadvantages: Floyd Rose Trem. Hard to get parts
I won't bother boring you with the specs of this guitar, if you are looking to buy it you will probably already know them already! Just for reference, the model I have is the orange quilt top with maple fingerboard.
The Axis has a Floyd Rose, as opposed to the Super Sport which I believe is more akin to a fixed bridge. I am not keen on Floyd Rose trems due to the extra hassle with tuning and changing strings, but that is pretty much all I can fault with this guitar.
The neck is absolutely incredible, especially for someone with smaller hands. It is my favourite guitar to play, as it suits my hands so well with its narrow neck and short scale, it's much easier than guitars such as PRS and Jacksons of similar price, which have wider necks.
I find the MusicMan does not produce particularly clean sounds when amplified; that is to say ...
Advantages: Great to play. Excellent cheaper substitute for a Stingray. Beautiful neck. Disadvantages: Not the smallest/lightest bass on the market.
Please note that this review is of the old style Ernie Ball MusicMan Sterling Bass - not to be confused with the new 2009 Sterling series of guitars/basses! The one I have is a 4 string, which I purchased second hand.
I bought the Sterling as an upgrade from my MusicMan SUB bass. Having also played a Stringray, I would say the Sterling is much more akin to the Stingray than the SUB. The neck in particular plays a lot more like a Stingray. The neck is absolutely fantastic. It is probably slightly narrower than your average bass neck, but I find this just makes it easier to navigate.
The bass is extremely well made, as you would expect from an Ernie Ball instrument, and parts do not appear to be that hard to get hold of should any replacements be required. With correct adjustment, I have found that I can get a suitably low action ...
