Advantages: An impressive, expansive film which breaks with tradition Disadvantages: could frustrate those who want a traditional story
For fans of BrigitteBardot, this film is a must-see, as she is frequently the camera's focus of attention. The camera roves over her naked body and lingers on her beautiful face - as befits the international star she already was in 1963 when this film was made. In fact it's almost a parody of the 'star-image' as used in films. One thing you quickly realise about this film is that it is always playing with cinematic imagery, always defying expectations and explanations. Although this was Godard's first big-budget production, he by no means capitulates to the Hollywood norm. This is far from being a mainstream film, in fact it is practically a comment on the constraints imposed on films by budgeting/production demands. One of the main parts of the narrative is the dynamic between the German director Fritz Lang (who plays himself ...

as well or been continually successful if it had of stayed as a drama but who knows.
I think the reason why this film works is that deep down, every woman if pressed would admit that they would love to be whisked away from their life by a millionaire who buys them clothes and treats them well but in the end realises that they love them for who they are and not what they are or what they do.
Julia Roberts who won a Golden Globe ward for this film plays Vivian, a hooker who has a chance meeting with Edward, the millionaire in Beverly Hills. He needs someone to attend functions with him whilst he is in town with no strings attached and agrees to pay Vivian for her time. Of course, it helps that Vivian is drop dead gorgeous, with legs that seem to go on for miles and a killer body. Would the same thing of happened if Vivian was ugly ...
Set in Saint Tropez, two fishermen become involved with a beautiful girl. One she marries, one she has an affair with and later leaves for a rich shipping merchant. French dialogue with subtitles.

Manufacturer's product description
In Roger Vadim's directorial debut, his then-wife, Brigitte Bardot, plays Juliette, a sumptuous orphan beauty who sparks an incendiary and erotically charged love triangle between herself and three men who desire her. Spending her days barefoot and barely working in the town tabac, Juliette loves to listen to the jukebox at the local bar and saunter past the men in town; all the while, she has eyes only for local thug Antoine. Millionaire Eric Carradine desires Juliet as much as he desires Antoine's family's oceanfront property. After being coldly spurned by Antoine, Juliette is rescued from a return to the orphanage when Antoine's timid younger brother, Michel (Jean-Louis Trintignant), proposes marriage, at the suggestion of Carradine. As the unlikely couple works hard at achieving a semblance of happiness, the dark forces that dwell inside Juliette's restless spirit force her closer and closer to Antoine. Vadim lets Bardot revel in the CinemaScope and Technicolor beauty of the film, and the simmering mambo-infused soundtrack traces the plot's erotic undercurrents as they drive all the characters toward an inevitable climax of erotic and violent explosion, personal revelation, and a New Wave definition of love and romance.
