This album has a well balanced track selection on it, featuring one of best metal songs of all time in 'One'. The album has few songs, but the songs are of good length making this album a credit to Thrash metal.
Here's a rundown of the tracks:
1. Blackened (6:48) Great opening track with some really quick heavy guitaring. Lead guitar in this is exquisite, with some unbelievable notes/chords. Lyrics fit the song brilliantly and are extremely well written. Overall a good opening track to set up the rest of the album.
2. ... And Justice For All (9:44) Again great heavy guitaring, although more purposeful in this. Again lead guitar reins supreme with some great sounds. Lyrics although well written and a little repetitive, which in turn make the song a little long, but that doesn't deflect from the fact that it's well written.
3. Eye Of The Beholder (6:25) Has a progressive opening riff which is addictive. Great rhythm throughout, both from guitars and drums. Lyrics although simplistic are good and work well in the context of the song. Overall great heavy 'play loud' song.
4. One (7:24) An unbelievable song. Starts off slow and moves to quick sharp guitaring in the middle that is great. Drumming is also exquisite, and done mostly with feet. Lyrics are also sublime and extremely thought-provoking. Definitely the best song on the album and worth the price of it alone.
5. The Shortest Straw (6:35) Has a start/stop opening riff, which leads to a medium paced rhythm that is well composed. Great drumming and intense bass make the rhythm. Lyrics are well written and round the song off superbly. Overall one of the better songs on the album.
6. Harvester Of Sorrow (5:42) Probably second only to 'One' as the best song on the album. Great progressive start that includes some great bass playing. Purposeful rhythm throughout, that sounds really good at full blast. Extremely well thought lyrics finish off this song exceptionally.
7. The Frayed Ends Of Sanity (7:40) Has a long purposeful start that bridges to the rhythm well. Has some intense lead guiatring and well written lyrics. Overall a well rounded song that is pretty good.
8. To Live Is To Die (9:48) Another quite brilliant song, although a little long. Has a rather 'Spanish' sounding guitar at the start that leads to some more familiar short sharp heavy guitaring for the rhythm. There's also some unbelievable lead guitaring as well, in which Hammett excels himself. Great lyrics round the song off superbly.
9. Dyers Eve (5:12) Has an quick heavy opening riff, that leads to some impressive rhythm that includes some outstanding drumming Also Hammett again lets us hear his great talents, with some brilliant lead guitar. Well written lyrics again round off the song and make it a good 'Thrashy' song to complete the album.
This 1988 release is a good old Thrash album plain and simply. If you want mellow, heartfelt songs then this ain't the album for you. If you like heavy aggressive music then this is a great album for you to have.

Advantages: It's Metallica, quite simply. Amid much criticism from the American public in their early years they still knock out such fantastic, original tracks. Well worth purchasing Disadvantages: Bass is too quiet depending on how you like your metal but doesn't do much to spoil sound
