DMX has never been scared to offend, with his trade mark bark.. he has always been one of the scariest men in Hip Hop. However does he sound genunine or a wannabe like Eminem? No, DMX really does have the history and previous experiences to back up his lyrics.. thats what gives him his effect. I am far from a fan of gangsta Hip Hop.. infact I have an immense dislike for it, but And Then There Was X actually isnt too bad. I wasnt a great fan of previous albums, but there is an energy in this latest effort that one cant help enjoying.
Okay the lyrics arent exactly groundbreaking.. but for some reason on this album they seem to flow more easily, and in many places they are less violent than the grossly over-rated 'Flesh Of My Flesh..' However what keeps this album going is the production.. Again it is hardly original, but it works.. the beats make you move and still sound fresh months after. Full of commercial appeal yes, infact it sounds completely sold out, but who cares.. its fun..
This album is a must for the gangsta fans, and a decent purchase for us 'Native Tongue' fans.. very rarely does an album have crossover appeal nowadays but D may very well have found a formula, lets hope he will be able to keep to this up.. if he can stay sane that is ;)
