Advantages: Very well acted and presented Disadvantages: Nothing really
Too Young To Die? is a powerful film, based on a true story, and starring Juliette Lewis as minor Amanda Sue Bradley, who is on trial for murder at the age of 15.
I have put off watching this for quite a while now, but today I put it on. Not the most common thing to be watching mid morning, but I felt in the mood, and was rewarded wth a well acted, well produced hour and a half that kept me riveted to the screen.
Amanda has led a horrible teen-life. Raped and abused by her stepfather from the age of 13, she is shunned by her mother and forced to get help where she can. As a result, she falls in with hustler Billy (Brad Pitt) who introduces her to a sleazy strip club. When she is saved by military sergeant Mike, things are looking up, but as things spiral, pressures mount on Mike due to her age, and when Billy comes back into ...
Advantages: Some funny parts, the supporting cast, not too technical Disadvantages: A bit laddish, not enough on the places visited
desperately trying to create some sense of excitement from something quite ordinary. I am not a sailor at all so this must have been why I found these incidents exciting and very funny. I also thought that the "sailing bits" were explained well without too much jargon but not so simplified as to be patronising. As someone's who knowledge of nautical terms barely exceeds "hello sailor" this was very welcome.
Another criticism, especially from the sailors was that Jones seems to derive no pleasure at all from the voyage. On the surface there is a lot of bickering among the shipmates, general grumbling about the tidiness - or not - of the cabin and the short-temperedness and irritation that comes with being in a confined space for so long with the same people; no wonder they call it "cabin fever". To me, this was merely Griff Rhys Jones's laconic ...
Advantages: Fairly enjoyable period drama Disadvantages: Men and children could find it extremely boring
Where Angels Fear to Tread is a period drama adapted from an E M Forster novel directed by Charles Sturridge. Not having read the novel I honestly can't say how true the film is to the book... It's a PG certificate and runs for 112 minutes. The film stars Helen Mirren, Helena Bonham-Carter, Judy Davis, Rupert Graves, Giovanni Guidelli and Barbara Jefford.
If you're wondering about the title of this review, then I'm sorry it doesn't mean much; I just couldn't get inspiration enough to think of a different one!
