Advantages: Some good tracks Disadvantages: Some weak tracks
I'm not usually a big fan of soundtrack CDs. Sometimes they work and the music is evocative of a great film or television series. But often, the music tracks are too varied and you'll find you like some and hate others.
But I decided to buy the soundtrack CD toAshestoAshes, because the music is integral to the television series and while watching it, I often remarked on how good the music was. AshestoAshes is set in 1981 when I was 11-12 and fairly regularly buying singles, so I did think it would be worth buying this album.
The 1980s theme of the series is great and it is reproduced well in this CD. The album has twenty songs from the time, plus a couple of short interludes and the theme tune to the TV series. It lasts a total of 69 minutes.
The CD is a Digipak version, whereas I really prefer the more sturdy box. It ...
Advantages: incredibly unique music Disadvantages: perhaps a little too bleak at times
Blimey - what an album! It's not, however, very likeable. Scott's previous record Climate Of Hunter, for all it's oddities, is still a collection of relatively traditional songs. Tilt isn't.
But the opening "Farmer In The City" is still one of the best tracks ever recorded and still, after 12 years and goodness knows how many plays, brings me to the verge of tears at the "Paulo, take me with you..." bit. Amazing. The strings are stunningly powerful.
"The Cockfighter" is weird beyond belief, especially the way Scott's voice fractures as he sings "it's a beautiful ni-HIght" which is just freaky. The minute of disturbing scratching noises at the start of the track weirds me out too. A whole new category of music - industrial classical.
"Bouncer See Bouncer" goes on way too long before that lovely shaft of light, the orchestra backed ...
Advantages: It's a bit different... Disadvantages: It's a bit bad....
I bought this album (before sample tracks for it were available on Amazon) thinking that there would be some nice dark versions of some Bowie tracks. I was prepared for a few strange noises and slightly discordant sounds - some goth music is like that. What I wasn't prepared for was the droning nature of all these tracks!
For a start, a lot of the songs don't lend themselves to the moody, atmospheric goth sound (in hindsight, I should have realised this). Admittedly, Time, Always Crashing, The Man Who Sold The World and Look Back In Anger could be done well in the gothic style, but there are so much better options in 1984, Stay, She Shook Me Cold, Lady Stardust and even Space Oddity.
I think this album would interest only a certain niche of the goth market - the songs are in a similar somewhat un-tuneful style (to my ears). I would ...
