an ever-improving jazz one. She's got over her eager-puppylike tendency to overdo it (her scatting was often just too much). With Signature shes finally learned that simplicity is the hardest trick to master, but also the most rewarding. Backed by the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Barron, Frank Wess and Lewis Nash, Callaway goes over a series of standards associated with the likes of Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. Callaway puts her stamp on these songs: theres a newfound velvety smoothness and casual sense of ease to her voice and both are absolutely enchanting. Not only is this Callaways finest achievement yet, but its already one of the years best jazz vocal records. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Ann Hampton Callaway's Easy Living is an excellent showcase for her dark yet wide-ranging voice. Performing in combos of three, four, or five, the all-star line-up includes pianists Kenny Barron, Benny Green, and Bill Charlap, and features guest stars Wynton Marsalis, Nelson Rangell, Andy Farber, and Gerry Niewood. Callaway also includes one of her own songs, the slow rumba "Come Take My Hand," among the familiar ballads and swing numbers. Fans of jazz singing will love this one. --David Horiuchi

Ella with Love, a 1996 recording rereleased in 1999 as a companion to her small-ensemble album, Easy Living. Here Callaway is supported by a full band anchored by pianist Cyrus Chestnut, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Lewis Nash, while Wynton Marsalis sits in for two numbers. "How High the Moon" begins in a loping gait before catching fire and including the inevitable scat solo. While Callaway doesn't include any of her own songs among this collection of standards, it's one of her best albums. --David Horiuchi

Advantages: Lovely day out, lots to see and do Disadvantages: Too much to take in on one visit
I've wanted to visit Hampton Court for absolutely ages, it's been on my "list of things to do" for about five years now. Finally, after much delay, I achieved my goal on the May bank holiday.
History
Hampton Court is probably best known as Henry VIII's royal palace, but in fact it was built by Cardinal Wolsey, Henry's right hand man. Since Henry seized it from Wolsey (sorry, was given it by Wolsey...) it has been extensively modified by various monarchs from Elizabeth I through William and Mary and Queen Anne.
Various grace and favour apartments were established in the buildings in the early 1800s, which led to further changes in layout and use, and although these apartments are no longer allocated to people there are still a few people living there. A new exhibition at the palace when we visited allowed us to view one ...
Advantages: Great royal history, inside and out Disadvantages: None at all
Henry VIII is arriving on his barge, out on the Thames, the scurry of activity is hectic, all over the palace.
Cast your imagination back to those historic, royal days; fearful, hospitable, sociable and most of all regal times. It's easy to relive life at Hampton Court, guides dress in period costume and talk in the dialect of the day and exhibitions make it come alive. Take time to step back in time!
Time in this case is from 500 years ago. My research tells me that probably the first most famous resident was Thomas Wolsley, who took over the palace in 1514 when he became Archbishop of York. He had to give it up when Henry VIII wanted it- I think he wanted to keep his head, so gave up the palace!
Henry took over around 1537 and his only son was born there and christened in the Chapel Royal; a couple of days later the baby ...
Advantages: Touching, romantic and a story of childhood Disadvantages: none
In my opinion this box set is a must see for any little girl and her mother as it truly is a very delightful story. It is based on the books by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
It is about an orphan, Anne who goes to live in Green Gables, Avonlea, on Prince Edward island with an old lady and her brother. Anne is played terrificly well by the Canadian actress Megan Follows and has the well renound actress Colleen Dewhurst as Marilla Cutherbert. The films basically follow Anne as she grows up and all the trials and tribulations of being an orphan, having to act politely in grown up situations and the fact that she does not like her red hair!
As the story progresses and it moves on in time it also follows the love story between her and Gilbert Blythe.
It is set in a truly wonderful time, of innocence and will really make you teary eyed in places ...
