sharpshootin' funfest based on the 1 147-performance Broadway smash boasting Irving Berlin's beloved score including Doin' What Comes Natur'lly I Got the Sun in the Morning and the anthemic There's No Business like Show Business. As produced by Arthur Freed directed by George Sidney and seen and heard in a new digital transfer from restored elements. This lavish spirited production showcases songs and performances with bull's-eye precision earning an Oscar for adaptation scoring. The story is brawling boy-meets-girl-meets-buckshot rivalry. But love finally triumphs when Annie proves that yes you can get a man with a gun!

time it has been revived in New York and London since its pre miere in 1946. Here we have all the score on a single CD, a treasure-trove of mu sical abundance given a standout performance under the direction of John McGlinn . The recording gets off to a cracking pace with one of Buffalo Bill's outriders announcing his arrival in town. We then meet the down-to-earth Annie Oakley ("D oin' what comes natur'lly"), who reveals her backwoods upbringing under her bras h exterior in the touching song "They Say It's Wonderful" ("I can't recall who s aid it / I know I never read it"). Annie famously celebrates her camaraderie wit h Frank Butler and Buffalo Bill in "There's No Business Like Show Business", and her subsequent rivalry with Frank in "Anything You Can Do" ("You couldn't beat me in long distance spitting!"). Kim Criswell's portrayal occasionally borders o n the strident, yet there is never any doubt of her commitment to the role, nor that of baritone Thomas Hampson as Frank Butler who gives a terrific performance of "My Defences Are Down". The lesser-known Berlin numbers are all gems, too, f rom Annie's hymn to illicit liquor ("Moonshine Lullaby") to the often cut duets between Tommy and Winnie. A classic all round.--Adrian Edwards

1950, four years after it had taken Broadway by storm. The irresistible combination of the story of ground-breaking sharpshooter Annie Oakley, fantastic songs like the rousing anthem "There's No Business Like Show Business" and the setting of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, made most people feel it was worth the wait. More than half a century on, the book creaks audibly and the treatment of the "Indians" who make up the bulk of the troupe is inevitably embarrassing. But in glorious Technicolor, this in-your-face spectacular defies you not to get sucked in. Quite simply, the show is a winner. Ethel Merman's performance on Broadway became an immediate show business legend, but she was largely ignored by Hollywood. Here, Betty Hutton's whirlwind Annie is, on its own terms, an explosive and hugely entertaining turn, matched by Howard Keel in his first starring part as Frank Butler. But Judy Garland was the first choice for the role and had already filmed several numbers before MGM fired her for her erratic behaviour. It seems almost cruel to include a couple of her songs as extras; even a 40-watt Garland makes the otherwise incandescent Hutton look merely adequate. They certainly add a frisson to this celebration of all-American entertainment at its boldest and brassiest. On the DVD: Annie Get Your Gun is presented in standard 4:3 format (the original aspect ratio was a similar 1.37:1) and the picture quality is so sharp it blows you out of your seat. Likewise the stereo soundtrack, brilliant for songs which include "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly", "Anything You Can Do" and the sublime "They Say it's Wonderful". Apart from the Garland numbers, the extras include a Hutton outtake and an introduction to the show from a recent Broadway Annie, Susan Lucci. Overall, though, the show's the thing. --Piers Ford
Advantages: Some great songs from bands you may not have heard before Disadvantages: Some poor tunes
...this compilation is really quite an average release with relatively few tunes really managing to impress on a mass scale, but there are glimpses of genius on the CD which make it well worth spending your hard earned cash on. There are some added bonuses on the CD in videos from Antifreeze, Goldfinger, Neil Hamburger, Ozma, and The Vandals so even if you are not in to the music then there are always some visuals for you to get in to.

Advantages: Ridculously Catchy Pop Disadvantages: Errrr none really!
...Love" is the track for you. Its not R&B its not pop its somewhere in between. Its not the most instant track and her vocals are really quiet but its cool.
The next song 'Happy Without You' is odd. Its sultry and dark. But in parts it kinda becomes bland pop... that sounds awful but it somehow works! Theres a tinge of rock to this song which makes an interesting change.
Another favourite track and highlight of the album is 'Greatest Hit'. This song has a sample of 'Everybody' by Madonna the Queen Of Pop! This was the first single by Annie and didnt scratch the sides of the charts! Its fantastic very disco friendly!
Eight minute long 'Come Together' is a bit of a weird epic! Two ins are slow little beats and Annie's breathy vocals then the disco kicks in. I like it alot - its just too long! You do get lost in it though (in a good way...

Advantages: Varied popular songs plus some obscure ones Disadvantages: The obscure songs are probably not to everyones taste
...This is the second CD I have brought from this series, I find these CD's a general overview of the years music relating to well known tracks to some that are unknown to me. This therefore make is a very good album to listen to as you know what you are getting from some of the songs. artists like Sterophonics, Muse, Athlete, The Libertines and so on are well known and will appeal to the majority. There are however some more obscure songs bands like Client, Bees, which although are not to bad for my taste they may not appeal to everyone.
On the whole I have found this to be a good album in my collection and one that I will listen to if I can not make up my mind. If you like the main popular songs on this album then I would recommend to have this in your collection....
