time it has been revived in New York and London since its pre miere in 1946. Here we have all the score on a single CD, a treasure-trove of mu sical abundance given a standout performance under the direction of John McGlinn . The recording gets off to a cracking pace with one of Buffalo Bill's outriders announcing his arrival in town. We then meet the down-to-earth Annie Oakley ("D oin' what comes natur'lly"), who reveals her backwoods upbringing under her bras h exterior in the touching song "They Say It's Wonderful" ("I can't recall who s aid it / I know I never read it"). Annie famously celebrates her camaraderie wit h Frank Butler and Buffalo Bill in "There's No Business Like Show Business", and her subsequent rivalry with Frank in "Anything You Can Do" ("You couldn't beat me in long distance spitting!"). Kim Criswell's portrayal occasionally borders o n the strident, yet there is never any doubt of her commitment to the role, nor that of baritone Thomas Hampson as Frank Butler who gives a terrific performance of "My Defences Are Down". The lesser-known Berlin numbers are all gems, too, f rom Annie's hymn to illicit liquor ("Moonshine Lullaby") to the often cut duets between Tommy and Winnie. A classic all round. --Adrian Edwards

1950, four years after it had taken Broadway by storm. The irresistible combination of the story of ground-breaking sharpshooter Annie Oakley, fantastic songs like the rousing anthem "There's No Business Like Show Business" and the setting of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, made most people feel it was worth the wait. More than half a century on, the book creaks audibly and the treatment of the "Indians" who make up the bulk of the troupe is inevitably embarrassing. But in glorious Technicolor, this in-your-face spectacular defies you not to get sucked in. Quite simply, the show is a winner. Ethel Merman's performance on Broadway became an immediate show business legend, but she was largely ignored by Hollywood. Here, Betty Hutton's whirlwind Annie is, on its own terms, an explosive and hugely entertaining turn, matched by Howard Keel in his first starring part as Frank Butler. But Judy Garland was the first choice for the role and had already filmed several numbers before MGM fired her for her erratic behaviour. It seems almost cruel to include a couple of her songs as extras; even a 40-watt Garland makes the otherwise incandescent Hutton look merely adequate. They certainly add a frisson to this celebration of all-American entertainment at its boldest and brassiest. On the DVD: Annie Get Your Gun is presented in standard 4:3 format (the original aspect ratio was a similar 1.37:1) and the picture quality is so sharp it blows you out of your seat. Likewise the stereo soundtrack, brilliant for songs which include "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly", "Anything You Can Do" and the sublime "They Say it's Wonderful". Apart from the Garland numbers, the extras include a Hutton outtake and an introduction to the show from a recent Broadway Annie, Susan Lucci. Overall, though, the show's the thing. --Piers Ford

Advantages: Perfect for any musical fanatic Disadvantages: Mainly includes the popular songs everyone knows
...This CD includes all the famous and more well-known songs from musicals and shows such as 'Theres no business like show business' from AnnieGetYourGun, 'Memory' from Cats and 'Music of the Night' from Phantom of the Opera, if you know all the classics and just want a CD to sing along to then this is the perfect CD for you, there are some lesser known songs on it aswell such as 'Some Enchanted Evening' from South Pacific (which i love but judging by my friends attitudes is not a favourite of others!) however the coverage is, in the majority, of all the songs everyone loves to love! Perfect for later in the evening at parties when everyone has had 'a few' as the well known, easy to dance to tracks will have everyone from all age groups singing and dancing along however if you're looking for music to sit down and listen to thought...

Advantages: The definitive collection ... all the best tracks included Disadvantages: Maybe a few too many at the end
...blonde wig as a night club singer. Stewart keeps appearing with or sitting with a variety of girls. At the end Anniegets her man leaving Dave on his own.
4. Right By Your Side * 1983
This is a live stage performance with a calypso rhythm. Their costumes suggest they have come from the Russian steppes.
5. Here Comes The Rain Again * 1983
Stewart is the cameraman producing a solarised picture. Annie suggests a Bronte character walking about on a cliff top in a long white nightie!
6. Sex Crime (1984) * 1984
This is sung in a studio with a backdrop of shots from the movie.
7. Julia 1984
A simple head and shoulders shot of Annie singing this song with various superimpositions. The song is highly suggestive of the material she used on her solo albums.
8. Would I Lie To You * 1985
This is a strong rocker of a song. The video...

Advantages: Brilliant vocals Disadvantages: none at all
...Although Medusa is mainly an album featuring cover versions of previouly popular songs, in some cases the songs in Medusa are evn better than the original. Not to upset Bob Marley fans but I do truly think that the Waiting in vain track on the Medusa by Annie is a notch better. Other songs featured on the album include : No more I love yous, Waiting in vain, A whiter shade of pale ( which Annie Lennox says is the first ever album she bought), Train in vain, Something so right. All these songs if you notice had previously been sung by male voclists, which makes Annie's job all the more diffcult.
Others included 'Take Me To The River', though some were taken from less familiar sources, including the Lover Speaks' 'No More I Love You's', the Clash 's 'Train In Vain' and Blue Nile's 'Downtown Lights'. Get this album and you will not regret...
