Advantages: Great Tracks Throughout Disadvantages: None
As an artist, EricClapton has done a huge amount to promote early blues musicians, reworking some songs, and simply playing versions that follow them to the note. This is notably obvious on Me & Mr Johnson, his tribute to the work of Robert Johnson, often seen as the king of delta blues, but can be found throughout his catalogue. His ability as a guitarist is well known and it is prominent throughout the album as you might guess, being backed by a strong group of musicians to further add to the intimacy of the performance. And it is this ability that allows him to delve into the blues catalogue and provide covers that almost match the beauty of the originals, although admittedly with a larger instrumental backing in most cases.
The album itself was recorded in a small venue to an equally small audience, whom I assume are big fans ...
Advantages: This is a live peformance Disadvantages: It's not a triple album
to open up this
slow song, The vocals opening with "Three miles to the river that will carry me away" This is
another beautiful (there I've done it again) song that needs to be heard to adequately describe the
quality of the musicianship, it is also, I think a very powerful song. A fine keyboard solo with Eric
finishing the song with a building guitar solo that sets this song apart from many others.
9. Going Down Slow - written by St Louis Jimmy - This is a fine blues song arguably for me the best
on the album with fine vocals, keyboard and guitar solos throughout, with the Bass and Drums
featuring prominently towards the close of the track. Finished of with a guitar solo and into the
first chord of
10. She's Gone - written by EricClapton and Simon Climie - Although the guitar work ...
Advantages: Robert Johnsons music is showcased by great musicians. Disadvantages: Not all Robert Johnsons songs were covered.
I rate this excellent because the guitarist pays homage to his hero, in his style the musicianship is without fault throughout. It is nice to see the Blues played with such energy and obvious enjoyment by all concerned.
The only thing that could be a negative is that not all of Robert Johnsons songs have been covered by EricClapton yet and subsequentely presented on an album. I hope that these will be done on a future album, as EC has covered most of his work.
I have personally heard EricClapton play "Milk Cows Calf Blues" and "Little Queen of Spades" from this album at the Royal Albert Hall and at the Manchester Evening News Arena and the live versions were even better than on the cd.
Robert Johnson, in his short life, only wrote and recorded 29 songs before he was killed, the most popular version of his death being that he ...
Personnel: Eric Clapton, Albert Lee (vocals, guitar); Gary Brooker (vocals, keyboards); Chris Stainton (keyboards); Dave Markee (bass); Henry Spinetti (drums, percussion). All tracks have been digitally remastered. On Eric Clapton's last studio album for RSO Records, he re-teamed with producer Tom Dowd on a record that found the talented guitarist writing the words and music for most of the material. Dedicated to recently deceased Domino/bandmate Carl Radle, ANOTHER TICKET found Clapton backed by most of the band he'd toured with in Japan (where the live JUST ONE NIGHT was recorded) including the nimble-fingered Albert Lee and keyboardist Chris Stainton. Tipping his hat to the blues, Slowhand interprets Muddy Waters ("Blow Wind Blow") and Sleepy John Estes ("Floating Bridge"). The only other cover Clapton included was by country songwriters Troy Seals and Eddie Setser ("Black Rose"). As for his own material, Clapton's only dabbling with the mellow singer-songwriter image he'd cultivated in the '70s is found in "Something Special." Elsewhere, the guitar hero delves into lite funk ("Catch Me If You Can," co-written with Procul Harum's Gary Brooker, who also played on the album), borderline fusion ("Rita Mae") and pop both catchy ("I Can't Stand It") and frothy (the title track).
