Little Fingers retain a sizeable following two
decades after they first appeared on the John Peel
Show and continue to prove a viable live
proposition. This is due in no small part to the
reputation of those classic early singles "Suspect
Device" and "Alternative Ulster", each an
incendiary blast of political anger and teenage
disaffection meriting a place in any serious punk
collection. Naturally, those tracks, together with
the angst-tainted autobiography of "Wasted Life"
and "Gotta Getaway" form the highlights of this
three-CD anthology, which rounds up all the band's
singles and B-sides.   The tracks include include
1991's banned 45 "Beirut Moon", a flimsy Iron
Maiden soundalike which dealt with the kidnapping
of journalist John McCarthy in the Lebanon. Like
compatriots the Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers
floundered once they moved away from their
original formula, experimental forays into pop and
reggae in the 1980s proving largely uninspiring.,
At least the third disc, a passionate singalong
live set featuring the band's most cherishable
moments of energetic spleen  (previously available
as the album See You Up There) goes some way to
explaining their enduring appeal. --Kevin Maidment

BLUES AT ITS BEST
Review of BB King - King, BB by michellej

Advantages: JUMPIN TUNES
Disadvantages: HARDLY ANY

...Another great Rhythm & Blues artist is the unforgettable BB King, who is indeed the King of Rhythm and Blues. The electric guitar just seems to sing when his fingers stroke the strings, I’ve always been a fan of BB King since I became a rhythm and blues fanatic, what I really want to do is go to his café in New Orleans and listen to him jam personally. Now that would be unforgettable. He has a bass voice, very deep and husky. I can’t really say much about the King Of Rhythm and Blues apart from no-one will beat him and he’ll always retain that figure. This is a great album for the serious Rhythm & Blues listener, even if you’re not a fan or a bit of the uneducated side when it comes to the creation of music.. have a listen… this is how music began! Tracks on the Anthology album include: How Blue Can... Read review

Skanking its way to the top!
Review of Inflammable Material [PA] - Stiff Little Fingers by eddyduck84

Advantages: cheap and awesome punktastic!
Disadvantages: you have to like punk i guess

...Stiff Little Fingers, a band held by most true punk fans to be one of the better bands of its day. Although it doesnt have the current popularity of the clash or sex pistols, which is probably a good thing, this band really do capture the punk attitude and do it very well. The album has some absolute classics on it such as alternative ulster (yes they're irish - perhaps an old day version of flogging molly?) which is not only really good punk music, but yes, has some darn polotics in it too! there are 13 tracks and 2 more bonus tracks AND a fairly lengthy interview by Alan Parker with Jake Burns (lead singer) giving you an even better feel and understanding of the band. If its just the music your after, I am guessing you are looking at this album because you like punk. If thats the case you'll definately not be let down, its... Read review

Two Doors Down
Review of Platinum And Gold Collection - Dolly Parton by hanpau22

Advantages: "Ya'll know what al' the fuss is about"
Disadvantages: Populist anthology which doesn't represent the breadth of her output

...There's a great little noticeboard at Dollywood in Seiver County, Tennessee that refers to the resident magician's career "B.D." i.e. before Dollywood. I cannot imagine life before I knew Dolly Parton's records but, if I could, I should imagine it would be summed up in the words of love lorn heroine of "Two Doors Down". "Two doors down They're laughing and drinkin', and having a party Two doors down They're not aware that I'm around" If you're still before Dolly - and can accept that a compilation won't give you an idea of her current recording directions or even reference significant portions of her output - this is a lively introduction. Songs like 'The Seeker' and 'Potential New Boyfriend' are very dated but were incredibly popular in their time. Others, 'Joshua', 'Jolene' and '9 to 5' will sound instantly familiar... Read review
