Ultima Thule (The Electronic Magic Of Tangerine Dream) - Tangerine Dream

Advantages: One of the best 'electronic' albums ever
Disadvantages: It is somewhat short

...After the success of their 1974 release "Phaedra", Tangerine Dream released their last organic sounding masterpiece "Rubycon", before becoming a more conventional sounding electronic band. To try and describe the purely instrumental music on this album is difficult. Most people regard electronic music as pings, beeps and other more farty sounds, but here the early synthesisers and manipulated sounds create a wash of noise somewhat like the aural equivalent of a watercolour. The first piece (Rubycon Part One) sounds like a life-cycle of some alien sound creature. The beginning with its gong like sounds conjuring up something stirring in a dark damp cave before bursting into life in the sunshine with eerie bird-like calling. ...* Exit – The entrance * It was recorded in the summer of 1981 and released in September of the same year, containing 6 tracks using the very latest electronic equipment at the time. There were no acoustic instruments used at all. They didn’t use engineers either. They just had everything around them, the same way as on-stage during concerts. According to Edgar Froese, they built everything around a MCI mixing console, because they needed to have all the instruments within easy reach. * Some history * The album was about world peace, with an anti-nuclear message, as the first track, ‘Kiew Mission’, suggests. It features a Russian actress reciting words about world peace and communication. The album's press release included: "The words are directed at people in Russia. Advantages: Easy listening and unique
Disadvantages: Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

...is actually considered a reputable artist now, so the least she could do is feature on 'Love Hate' I guess. 'Livin a Lie' was actually the first track I heard from the album and I wasn't sure who's project it was even going to be for, as they really do share the content out between themselves. It may not quite be a Rihanna and Ne-Yo collaboration but it is without a doubt one of the best ignored tracks of 2007. You are likely to hear it now and again on the radio though, if you're lucky. Kanye West isn't the only guy who is man enough to pour his heart out about his mother, and Dream joints him with this dedication in 'Mama'. Take a magic carpet ride with The-Dream to close the album, although you feel this track is more for him than the listeners.
