original cast recording ofAnyone Can Whistle, despite its blink-and-you'll-miss-it run of nine performances in 1964. That's often blamed on the challenging and confus...
Advantages: First Broadway Rocky since the early 80s Disadvantages: Only really for collectors, acquired taste
...I was lucky enough to see this production with this cast on Broadway - I say lucky in that many Brits wouldn't have got that chance and because I saw it for free. However, if I had had to pay the $80 or something the tickets were selling for, I'd have been very disappointed indeed. I am also reviewing from a promotional only copy, which I believe is simply a pre-release rather than markedly changed as it contains the same cast. I also got it free!
The album contains all the regular stage show songs, including Once In A While, with the occasional introductory speech before a song.
This would not be an album I would recommend to those who have never heard either the Picture Show album or the Roxy Cast album as the songs are treated somewhat differently and might put you off the stage version in the UK if you hadn't already heard...

Advantages: Humorous lyrics delivered with real panache Disadvantages: You might prefer to have seen the stage show first
...centre stage: the chorus girls singing "We are not yet wed" to the tune of "We Are Not Yet Dead", backing knights singing a version of "We Are Not Yet Dead", Prince Herbert, Lancelot, Sir Robin, King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake singing their own verses and versions of "Find Your Grail", ending with the whole company joining in.
25. Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life - Company Bow
Upbeat reprise of this song. In the theatre, the words appear at the top of the set so the audience can join in.
If you've read this far without falling asleep, congratulations! I would definitely recommend this album to anyone who has seen the show as it is very hard to differentiate between the US and UK casts in terms of talent and musical style and each song will bring back memories of watching the show. If you haven't seen the show but think...

Advantages: Fun songs, great cast Disadvantages: Not for children or the easily offended
..., parts of it are inspired by the type of sketch and song that can be seen on Sesame Street, only instead of teaching numbers, colours and letters, we get taught about the word 'Schadenfreude'. And instead of being told that it's good to share, we get told about the ways in which 'Everyone's a Little Bit Racist'. By now you should be seeing the tone of the show (and hence the CD)...
The cast is divided into two parts. First we have the trio of actors who play one, human role throughout the show (like the kindly adults who appear on Sesame Street). These are Brian (played by Jordan Gelber), an out-of-work and happy-go-lucky man, Christmas Eve (Ann Harada), his Japanese fiancé who is a social worker, and Gary Coleman (the child actor all grown up, here played by a woman, Natalie Venetia Belcon), who runs the building where most...
