One of the best musicals ever....in my opinion.

The setting, its the early 1930's, an ocean liner, S.S American, sets off for Europe onboard there's gangsters, evangelists, stowaways, debutants, priests, you name it they're on this ship!!

Its very farcical in way of mismatched lovers, mistaken identities and closes calls!

Anyway the music...

After the overture, which in all fairness is quite a good piece of music, you get I GET A KICK OUT OF YOU, a great song, good lyrics. What more can you ask for?

Two upbeat chrous numbers follow, THERE'S NO CURE LIKE TRAVEL and BON VOYAGE. No matter how many times i listen to Bon Voyage it still makes me smile, throughout the song the women correct the men, which i think is what i like!!

YOUR THE TOP - One of Cole Porters classics so I'm told, sorry i think i forgot to mention that this is a Cole Porter Musical (Sorry!!) Anyway..Your the top, not my favourite song from the musical, it's that over the top song that all musicals seem to include, it fits in well with the rest of the songs though!!

Ahh and now for the second must of every musical the love song EASY TO LOVE, its ok as love songs go, a classic line in it where the men tell the women to stop crucifying the verse, definately best part of the song!!

The Sailor the sing some lovely songs I WANT TO ROW ON THE CREW and SAILORS CHANTEY which are far better to watch on stage and listen to rather than to just listen to!!

To close Act 1 it DE-LOVELY and ANYTHING GOES. Which are truely de-lightful. Anything Goes is one of those songs you put on repeat at least five times before listening to the rest of the album!

PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE - They sing this because onboard the ship there are no famous people, which of course does nothing for the ships credibility! So imagine their joy when the find out that Americas most wanted is on board...

It's a good song but feel you need to know that bit about the play otherwise listening to it wont make any sense!!

BLOW GABRIEL, BLOW, a personal favourite from the show as its definatly one of the most fun to sing along to!

GOODBYE LITTLE DREAM, GOODBYE, BE LIKE THE BLUEBIRD and ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT, are rather slow comapred to the rest of the CD, i find it much easier to listen to these songs as they're been performed rather than to just listen to!!

Ahhhh and yet another classic towards the end there's a reprise of anything goes and i get a kick out of you, but we're not gonna talk about them right now, because now is the time for BUDDIE BEWARE, this is another song that i think needs a little background, so you can really appriciate it, the character its song by Erma, is usualy portrayed as the petite little blonde, with quite a high pitched voice, and yet when she sings the song, she belts it out, which makes the song even better than it would be if it was just song normally!!

Beth's Final Thought:

I bought the music to this before actually seeing the show, and fell in love with the songs Anything Goes and I get a Kick Out Of You, which prompted me to go see the show, which the led me on to absolutley loving all the songs.

If your a musical fan, this soundtrack is a must, if your not, ahhh what the heck, still listen to it!!
