Brock was obviously very influencial in shaping the record, and the first song "You Are A Runner and I Am My Father's Son" sounds a lot like some old Modest Mouse tracks, blended superbly with an electronic synth feel that is heavily distorted by none the less sharp and intoxicating. The next song, "Modern World" takes a slightly different direction, away from the hard hitting gratting vocals, and into a dimension filled with a beautiful guitar riff and lyrics which softly yet clearly denounce our modern advances.
Here's the tracklisting:
1. You Are A Runner And I Am My Father's Son 2. Modern World 3. Grounds For Divorce 4. We Built Another World 5. Fancy Claps 6. Same Ghost Every Night 7. Shine A Light 8. Dear Sons And Daughters Of Hungry Ghosts 9. I'll Believe In Anything 10. It's A Curse 11. Dinner Bells 12. This Heart's On Fire
Undoubtably the best soung on the album is "Dear Son's and Daughter's of hungry Ghosts", a haunting yet emotionally satisfying track which builds up and up into a rousing chorus over the weird, distorted, and altogether beautiful backing vocals, which give this track the edge that it needs to take it from being a good melodical chorus into an amzing listening experience.
Overall, this record is easily one of my favourites of 2005. It is hard to put this album on and not feel a deep love for the quirky guitar parts and soothing yet distorted vocals. Even after many listenings, | still find parts which I don't recognise, which add that little extra element into the mix and make this a sublime experience. The lyrics aren't perfect, but for this style of indie rock they fit well and I can't think of any bands in theis genre which do better. Love them.

Album Notes
Wolf Parade: Dan Boeckner (vocals, guitar); Spencer Krug (vocals, piano, keyboards); Hadji Bakara (keyboards); Arlen Thompson (drums). Recording information: Audible Alchemy, Portland, Oregon. Produced primarily by Isaac Brock, Wolf Parade's full-length Sub Pop debut, APOLOGIES TO THE QUEEN MARY, initially garnered attention because of the Canadian quartet's associations with Brock's revered group, Modest Mouse. However, given the potent indie-rock punch that this 2005 outing packs, Wolf Parade easily stands on its own merits, particularly since the band benefits from two gifted singer/songwriters, Dan Boeckner and Spencer Krug. On these 12 tracks, Boeckner and Krug's ragged, plaintive vocals careen over fierce guitar riffs, rambunctious rhythms, and buzzing keyboard lines, as some songs bristle with restless energy and others slip into hauntingly melancholy moments. Accolades for APOLOGIES started flying around months before the record's release, and Wolf Parade's bold, inventive performances here reveal exactly why the album warrants so much praise.
Album Reviews
Spin (p.60) - Ranked #39 in Spin's "40 Best Albums Of 2005" - "[F]or indie rock that's obsessed with history, that decayed-reel production feels right." Entertainment Weekly (No. 842, p.95) - "...APOLOGIES is the stuff fanzine dreams are made of..." - Grade: B+ Mojo (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[I]t's a turbulent, ever mood-shifting listen - perhaps rather of its time....Engaging, inventive and emotionally charged..." Magnet (p.112) - "Wolf Parade hails from Montreal, courts a post-punk-informed sound, has a vocalist whose quirky tenor yelp recalls David Byrne and attained early buzz-band status on the strength of its energetic, emotional performances."
