Advantages: It's Buddy Holly - Enough Said! Disadvantages: Unfortunately, Buddy's guitar disappears behind the over dubbing
...Unfortunately after Buddy's death, his Manager, Norman Petty hired the Fireballs, who overdubbed much of the original guitar and music by Buddy & the Crickets. The result is that the original music is so far back in the mix, they might as well have not bothered!
Buddy Holly was without doubt a musical genius, he was experiementing with elementary overdubbing before his untimely and tragic death. Therefore it is a great shame that Norman Petty treated his music this way.
If you want to hear the real Buddy Holly, then there are available collections which have the original undubbed music on them, but you may have to shop around. Buddy's music is far too important and indeed, enjoyable to be treated this way, and you the listener deserve the real thing, rather than a heavily overdubbed version....

Advantages: A good best of Buddy CD Disadvantages: I really cannot think of any
...This album is the perfect introduction to Buddy Holly. It is a must have for any well rounded music collection. It has most of the well known and classic tracks such as "Oh Boy" and "Rave On" and "Heart Beat". To some the tracks may sound a bit dated they are of their time (The late 1950's) but the simple lyrics and Buddys unmistakable voice with his hallmark hic-up sound are timeless moving and very catchy.
Buddy was a motivated and ambituous young man who had great vision.
At the time that these records were produced Buddy was ahead of his time producing and writing the tracks aswell as singing and playing the instruments.
The tracks are infectous the lyrics - as I have mentioned are quite simple but meaningful.
If Buddys life was not cut short so very very young I am quite sure that he would have gone on to produce music and would...

...system.
Of the songs, "Rubber Toy", where Cutler parodies his Jewish upbringing with a Topol-style wail, and "Everybody Got", with its single-entendre lyric about private parts, are the most satisfying in their humour and indeed in the actual quality of the songwriting - eat your heart out Cole Porter!
The funniest of the prose stories are "Big Jim" and "The Surly Buddy", two of the strangest accounts of village life you're ever likely to encounter. With friends like these...
Cutler's tracks are supplemented by a few contributions from Phyllis April King. She shares Cutler's fixations with minutiae and eccentric human behaviour and, although not quite as cutting as the old master, can certainly spin a decent yarn. The last, and longest track, "The Wasted Call" is a prime example, tying you in knots with its twisted logic.
If your tastes...
