selling smash "Barbie Girl". Developing a formula pioneered by their successful Swedish rivals Ace of Base and Whigfield, this album demonstrated that the band were more than just one hit wonders. Skilfully crafted for instant, easily digestible consumption, Aqua is equally entertaining at the club or at home. It is jammed full of bubble-gum pop classics, ranging from the Euro-disco opening track "Happy Girls And Happy Boys", to the Madonna-esque ballad "Turn Back Time". It is a treat for all pop lovers: an album which will both entertain and surprise. - -John Galilee

Advantages: never a dull moment Disadvantages: none
Aqua first burst onto the pop scene in this country with their single "Barbie girl" and it was a case of either you loved them or you hated them. The single sold millions yet very few people owned up to owning a copy so there are still many closet fans out there! This, the debut album from Lene, Rene, Soren and Claus is full with predictable europop but each one is pure undiluted pop, anyway aqua cant be diluted can it?
1. Happy boys, happy girls ... ...is the sound of the things to come on the album. High pitched vocals from Lene and the deep, husky rapping from Rene. Completely bonkers!
2. My oh My - This has got the sound of a very old super mario game in the intro but then builds up to a disco-dance frenzy. This was released over here and reached no.6.
3. Barbie Girl - Do i really need to explain this one in any detail? I don't think so! You would have to have heard this one if you have been ...

Advantages: Great music, catchy and a lovely trip down memory lane Disadvantages: Repetitive, cheesy pop
Back in the 90's when we were all that bit younger and wilder, when most of the music scene was becoming a little dull and definetly getting repitive along came a wonder band from Denmark. They brightened up our lives and taught us to see the funny side of music again. At the time they seemed annoying but n hynesight they were a fantastic band, they called themselves' AQUA.
Consisting of band members Lene, Rene, Soren and Claus the band released ... ...still managed to climb to number one. Which was the main selling point of this, their debut, album. The album starts with Happy Boy and Girls which is a carchy tune sung by Lene and Rene about how they want to be happy forever and not 'waste time on simple little things'. There are references to going and getting it on thoughout the song. The backing music is rather repititive as are the lyrics meaning they are very easy to pick up. My Oh My is the ...

Advantages: Great fun! Disadvantages: Some tracks perhaps a bit too similar; cover/inlay VERY bad
This was Aqua’s first album (not to be confused with their second Aquarius). This is definitely not as good as that one, but it’s still great, fun pop. Almost every tune does stick to the Barbie Girl/Doctor Jones/My Oh My formula, but they’re still great, and if you liked those songs you’ll like the rest, and standout tracks from that bunch (apart from those already mentioned) are Lollipop and Roses Are Red (which ironically were singles in certain ... ...the formula were singles too. Turn Back Time was taken from the Sliding Doors soundtrack, and it’s a brilliant mid-tempo song that deserved it’s number one position. Good Morning Sunshine, is another summery, mid-tempo brilliant track that unfortunately could only make number eighteen in December 1998. However, it’s still a fantastic song, and if you like Aqua, you’ll like this album. ...

Aqua. They may be te worst pop group in the long history of annoyingly diabolical pop groups. you'll notice I'm saying groups rather than bands. This is simply because Aqua, and all the groups like them, are not bands. They are people who advertise on BBC children's prgrammes by getting up on a Saturday morning, going into a TV studio, and dancing around in front of a hundred eight year olds while pretending to sing. You may have guessed by now that ...

Album Reviews: Spin (11/97, p.148) - 6 (out of 10) - "...AQUARIUM takes the jigged-up nursery rhymes of Europop to their logical, infantilized conclusions....Both remorselessly effervescent and consistently scary, Aqua is what you get when a group sounds like it's fronted by JonBenet Ramsey and Danny Devito's `Penguin.'"
