Aqua first burst onto the pop scene in this country with their single "Barbie girl" and it was a case of either you loved them or you hated them. The single sold millions yet very few people owned up to owning a copy so there are still many closet fans out there! This, the debut album from Lene, Rene, Soren and Claus is full with predictable europop but each one is pure undiluted pop, anyway aqua cant be diluted can it?
1. Happy boys, happy girls - A very string start to the album and this is the sound of the things to come on the album. High pitched vocals from Lene and the deep, husky rapping from Rene. Completely bonkers!
2. My oh My - This has got the sound of a very old super mario game in the intro but then builds up to a disco-dance frenzy. This was released over here and reached no.6.
3. Barbie Girl - Do i really need to explain this one in any detail? I don't think so! You would have to have heard this one if you have been copable of turning either the telly or radio on in the past 3 years. Sexy, raunchy, very tongue-in-cheek and totally addictive, a huge no.1!
4. Good morning sunshine - And shock, horror for this one, it's mid-tempo! More emphasis on the vocals rather than a frantic eurobeat and this shows off Lenes' beautiful, strong voice. This reached no.17.
5. Dr. Jones - This was the big follow up to "Barbie girl" and all eyes were on Aqua to see if they could avoid the one hit wonder status that has captured so many dance acts. It was another huge no.1 smash and was also huge all around the world.
6. Heat of the night - This is a difficult one to describe. Sort of has a caribbean feel to it, but is far to silly to be taken as seriously. Not as fast as most of the others but still excellent.
7. Be a Man - The one and obnly ballad on the album comes in the shape of this track. Good vocals make it likable but the drippy music and daft lyrics will never put Celine Dion out of a job.
8. Lollipop - This was one of their european releases that never had an official release over here. It was also huge in America. Very fast and very contagious, prepare for your mind to be taken control of.
9. Roses are red - A slightly darker sounding dance anthem here which was also given a release in Europe but not here. An irresistable chorus makes this a definate favourite of mine and is instantly lovable.
10. Turn Back time - Ok, there is one more ballad but it is rather fantastic. This song was used on the 'Sliding Doors' film soundtrack and is a good strong love song. Great vocals, gorgeous lyrics and a gentle electro dance beat helped Aqua to acheive their 3rd no.1 on the trot.
11. Calling you - And we end on a high which is where so many albums fail. This, as could the rest of the songs on the album, be released as a single but wasn't. It's too cheesy by far but always brings a smile to my face every time it comes out of my Hi-Fi. Excellent to cheer you up after a bad day.
As mention above every song on this album has the quality of a single which is what helped the album acheive excellent reviews and go on to sell millions and earn Aqua a very big army of fans. There IS atleast one song on this album that will be liked by everyone. Each song is too cathcy to be ignored but too daft to be taken seriously which is what Aqua will never be seen as. However, seriously enough to have three consecutive no.1 singles and a sell out world tour mind.
They performed a medly of all their hits at this years eurovision song contest and sounded fantastic. Each band member contributes the right attitude to making a band become so popular and so sucessful. The debut album is always difficult to follow up but was done superbly with "Aquarius" which you will have to check out if you like this one.
My fave songs on here? They are all superb but "Roses are red", "Barbie Girl" and "Calling you" are totally addictive. Aqua realise that their success mainly depends on the faster numbers and that's what they stick to best on here although the odd slower track is thrown in for diversity. If you haven't already experienced the genius that is Aqua then go out and join the millions of people who already own this album and give your ears a bit of light hearted pop in these depressing times we are all going through, every needs a little comic relief!!!
Advantages: Great music, catchy and a lovely trip down memory lane Disadvantages: Repetitive, cheesy pop
Back in the 90's when we were all that bit younger and wilder, when most of the music scene was becoming a little dull and definetly getting repitive along came a wonder band from Denmark. They brightened up our lives and taught us to see the funny side of music again. At the time they seemed annoying but n hynesight they were a fantastic band, they called themselves' AQUA.
Consisting of band members Lene, Rene, Soren and Claus the band released ... ...still managed to climb to number one. Which was the main selling point of this, their debut, album. The album starts with Happy Boy and Girls which is a carchy tune sung by Lene and Rene about how they want to be happy forever and not 'waste time on simple little things'. There are references to going and getting it on thoughout the song. The backing music is rather repititive as are the lyrics meaning they are very easy to pick up. My Oh My is the ...

Advantages: Great fun! Disadvantages: Some tracks perhaps a bit too similar; cover/inlay VERY bad
This was Aqua’s first album (not to be confused with their second Aquarius). This is definitely not as good as that one, but it’s still great, fun pop. Almost every tune does stick to the Barbie Girl/Doctor Jones/My Oh My formula, but they’re still great, and if you liked those songs you’ll like the rest, and standout tracks from that bunch (apart from those already mentioned) are Lollipop and Roses Are Red (which ironically were singles in certain ... ...the formula were singles too. Turn Back Time was taken from the Sliding Doors soundtrack, and it’s a brilliant mid-tempo song that deserved it’s number one position. Good Morning Sunshine, is another summery, mid-tempo brilliant track that unfortunately could only make number eighteen in December 1998. However, it’s still a fantastic song, and if you like Aqua, you’ll like this album. ...

Aqua. They may be te worst pop group in the long history of annoyingly diabolical pop groups. you'll notice I'm saying groups rather than bands. This is simply because Aqua, and all the groups like them, are not bands. They are people who advertise on BBC children's prgrammes by getting up on a Saturday morning, going into a TV studio, and dancing around in front of a hundred eight year olds while pretending to sing. You may have guessed by now that ...

Advantages: Good fun, happy poppy music, great for kids to dance to Disadvantages: No great lyrics, no depth
Aqua are very much a Europop kind of band, with caricatured images & happy smiling faces. This album features their two biggest hit singles - Barbie Girl & Doctor Jones. If you like those, you will love this album, as it is full of pretty much the same kind of thing. Most of the eleven tracks are upbeat poppy songs, although there are a couple of slower ballads too. Although I was a critic of the group at first & would not state I was a fan, this ...

Advantages: Happy Music for Happy people! :) Disadvantages: Your granny wouldn't appreciate them.
...Aqua, love them or hate them, are a very succesful band to say the least. They brought us the likes of "Barbie Girl" and "Doctor Jones" This mad Danish band are currently working on their third album at a secret location in Denmark and it's likely to be another Euro, manic dance album.
Aqua's debut album, Aquarium, went straight to the top of the charts in most countries, but their follow-up, Aquarius, was not so succesful. Aqua have matured (slightly) since the days of pink-haired Barbies and jumpy, childish basslines, as their second album was not quite so chaotic, but still extremely manic! :) A particular favorite on this album is a track called Halloween, and is all about a certain time of the year. Can you guess?
Anyway, if you haven't heard of aqua, I would advice you to stay away. But if you have been drawn into...

Album Notes: Aqua: Lene Grawford Nystrom, Rene Dif (vocals); Soren Rasted (various instruments, background vocals); Claus Noreen (various instruments). Additional personnel: Douglas Carr, Claus Hvass, Jan Langhoff (guitar); Bee, Kati, Vivian Cardinal, Marian Binderup, Mogens Binderup (background vocals). Producers: Johnny Jam, Delgado, Soren Rasted, Claus Norreen, Hartmann & Langhoff, Tommy Ekman, Per Aderbratt, Rene Dif. AQUARIUM isn't the place to turn if you're looking for introspective, soul-searching meditiations on the meaning of life and the universe. But if you like techno bubble gum this might just be a little slice of heaven. They love it in Denmark, where the album went quintuple platinum, and they love it in the clubs, because the mechanical, boppy, sing-songiness makes for the perfect dance music. "Happy Boys and Girls," the disc's opening track, is a perfect representation of the Aqua sound: "Be happy" squeal the little-girl backup singers. The drum machine kicks in, mechanical high-hat hissing away, and you can just see those European dance floors filling up with happy Danish boys and girls. This disc has a tongue-in-cheek feel to it, as if Aqua is almost satirizing the techno-dance genre, but it's basically harmless, good-natured fun.
Album Reviews: Spin (11/97, p.148) - 6 (out of 10) - "...AQUARIUM takes the jigged-up nursery rhymes of Europop to their logical, infantilized conclusions....Both remorselessly effervescent and consistently scary, Aqua is what you get when a group sounds like it's fronted by JonBenet Ramsey and Danny Devito's `Penguin.'" Entertainment Weekly (10/17/97, pp.71-72) - "...Keeping to Scando-pop tradition, Aqua's music is relentlessly upbeat and club oriented....The band's resume, which includes the score to a children's film in Denmark, reveals itself in the singsongy, nursery-rhyme feel of many of the tracks..." - Rating: C
