Back in the 90's when we were all that bit younger and wilder, when most of the music scene was becoming a little dull and definetly getting repitive along came a wonder band from Denmark. They brightened up our lives and taught us to see the funny side of music again. At the time they seemed annoying but n hynesight they were a fantastic band, they called themselves' AQUA.
Consisting of band members Lene, Rene, Soren and Claus the band released their debut single Barbie Girl which nobody took seriously but still managed to climb to number one. Which was the main selling point of this, their debut, album.
The album starts with Happy Boy and Girls which is a carchy tune sung by Lene and Rene about how they want to be happy forever and not 'waste time on simple little things'. There are references to going and getting it on thoughout the song. The backing music is rather
repititive as are the lyrics meaning they are very easy to pick up.
My Oh My is the next track which is slightly more complax and interesting than the first. Again Lene and Rene sing but in this song there are verses and a chorus. The song is about Prince Rene stealing from the rich to give to the poor which means he has 'no time for loving' while Lene wants him for herself to rule the kingdom.
The third track is the most famous on the album Brabie Girl. Lene plays the role of Barbie while Rene acts as Ken. Barbie wants Ken to say he'll be with her forever but he just wants to touch her and take her to parties. The lyrics are original but simple with lots of repitition and oo's and ahh's. The music is simple and the same tune is repeated several times.
Good Morning Sunshine is the title of track four. Lene tells the story of when the sun is high how 'you' react and compares ut to when the sky is grey. The sun is her only light. The music is again simple but effective. This is a ballad which shows Lene's true strengths. Rene then wraps in explanation which i personally thought was out of place andadds little to the song.
Another famous track Dr. Jones. The true meaning of this song is somewhat confused. Lene and Rene sing to try to awake the Dr., however the reason is a puzzlement. The lyrics again shared between Lene and Rene are basic and again oo's and ahh's feature heavily. This is the only song written only by Aqua.
The next track Heat of the Night has a Spanish theme which is quite unexpected. It is all about having a fiesta in the heat of the night. The verses of this song though existant are rare while the chorus makes up the bulk of the song. The backing music is pleasant and easy to move to.
By a Man is the title of the next track. A ballad sung by Lene. She sings about scars that no-one can heal and how the new girl is very special. The backing music is light but emotional while adds to the overall feeling of the song. Again this song shows Lene's true talent and the beauty of her voice.
Lolypop(Candyman) is a real clubbers' track. It is beaty, bassy and repetitive. The lyrics focus on various sources of sugar intermingled with getting it on references. Sung again by Lene and Rene, some of the best lyrics on the album.
Roses are Red is a highly cliched song. Honey is sweet but not as sweet as you. Dum da dudi dum features heavily. Again a great track for clubbing. The lyrics fail to make much sense, but who cares they still somehow manage to make it sound good.
Turn Back Time was released as a single in the days when people still remembered the Danish band. The song is almost a ballad doesn't quite classify. Lene's voice is again wonderful throughout the song. The backing music is quirky, as in most of the tracks, and even has the odd melody without lyrics.
Calling You is the final track on the album and just goes to prove they were more than a couple of pretty faces thrown together they can spell too, 'C.A.L.L.I.N.G'. Again a very catchy number than is easy to move to. There is little meaning within the song and more random noises constitute lyrics.
Despite being repetitive the album is great. I would recommend that anyone who was influenced by Aqua, or can even remember them, buy this CD, it reminds you of the 90's whle having a recet quality. Easy to move, dance or even work to the mucis is great, Lene's vice is great but whatever happened to them?
