Brazil's premier metal outfit, but it wasn't until 1991's breakthrough album Arise that they truly captured the hearts and minds of the international rock mainstream. Subsequently re-released with the addition of four bonus tracks--including the band's monumental annihilation of Motorhead's "Orgasmatron"--Arise highlights Sepultura's irrefutable stylistic kinship to Metallica. The harmonic interplay between Max Cavalera's rock-solid rhythm work and Andreas Kisser's lead lines--on occasions the six stringed equivalent of a fully-throttled dentist's drill--is devastating. Max's tortured vocal, meanwhile, absolutely refuses to take prisoners while brother Igor's rhythmic battery is sheer, unfettered aggression. Moments of restraint, as on the quite astonishing "Altered State", merely accentuate the band's trademark brutality. Even with historical perspective, Arise retains its original ignominious appeal; an essential purchase. --Ian Fortnam

The first track titled “Arise” starts off with a selection of strange, eerie sounds for 28 seconds, and then launches into good, heavy riffing. Max’s voice is angry as usual, although his lyrics are easier to make out in this album, as apposed to the previous three. “Arise” in my opinion is about the problems of wartime, the destruction ... ...“Dead Embryonic Cells” seems to be about the pain of being born into a world taken over by corruption and violence. Although it is not one of the major songs, “Murder” is one of my favourites. The riffs are good, lyrics and vocals and excellent, and as with most Sepultura songs, has a good little solo.
Like “Chaos AD”, this too will grow on you. Since it is one of Sepultura’s finer releases, you will find that it is good in everyway. The vocals, ...

Advantages: Best Sepultura CD Disadvantages: Nothing
...There are four classic sepultura albums, those being arise, beneath the remains, roots and chaos a.d.. For the metalheads the choice is arise or beneath the remains, for the trendies who just happened to come across sepultura or heard Jonathan davis from KORN was on the record it's roots. I like the kornish work of roots and although arise and beneath the remains are great cd's chaos a.d. is my personal favorite. Some of the all time sepultura classics are on this CD, including slave new world, refuse/resist, amen, propaganda, biotech is godzilla, clench fist, territory, and nomad. Sepulutura are great on this album, the political lyrics, the deep guitar-riffs of max, the great guitars by andreas kisser, and drums of igor cavalera (Brother of Max). This is where i feel sepultura reached thier musical hight and released an all time...
