Advantages: Alto saxophony at it's best. Disadvantages: Not to everyones taste.
...his death, and like many saxophonists, it is posthoumusly that we begin to appreciate their genius. Interestingly this is not just ArtPepper on this album, but we also get Chet Baker and MartyPaich....I am not reviewing them here as this is seen as an ArtPepper Quartet album, and they are playing with Art.
~~~Album 'disparity'~~~
Interestingly, Amazon lists the album with only 5 tracks, same artwork and a release date of 2007, the tracks listed there are:
1. Red Car
2. Shadow of Your Smile
3. Trip
4. Mambo de la Pinta
5. Besame Mucho
On Amazon this album is around £6.50.
iTunes lists the album as 2004 release with 17 (some missing from the Amazon listing) tracks, at £7.99, this is the version that I have and am reviewing.
Also I will not review every one of the 17 tracks but will concentrate on two or three...
The tracks on the CD are.....
1. Deutscher Girls
2. Puerto-Rican
3. It Doesn't Matter
4. LOU
5. You're So Physical
6. Cleopatra
The September Sessions soundtrack features Johnson as well as a number of his like-minded musician friends. The best laid down tracks here are, however, those by Johnson. His earnest voice and gentle guitar are truly hypnotic, even when covering the superbly memorable Jimmy Buffett's "Pirate Looks at 40." This one was recorded before the release of the film and is taken from Johnson's live session at KFOG studios. It's so under-produced and honest that, if you listen closely, you will notice the studio phone ring in the background.
Other songs that stand out include Greyboy's "Grey's Groove," a funky soul...
