In my opinion, if it counts for anything, this album is well worth shelling out for. It contains a number of well crafted, finely played and exquisitely sung songs. The only down side is the eight minute funk work out on track 13. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but is still a good tune.
Hardcore Weller fans will already have this, and I don't have to convince them. The rest of you should, if you get the chance, pick up a copy. Trust me. You won't be disappointed.
...can anyone resist such lyrics as "I might have looked but I've never seen your beauty" from The Start of Forever. This CD just confirms that the man is still improving. Savages, another powerful track with words like "you have no Gods, they've all disowned you" is so true of today's world. There is nothing false about Weller, his music or his lyrics everything comes from the heart. As Is Now is an appropriate title - I think he has finally grown ...

Well as were in a time of war and for some reason I went and wrote a food op yesterday and a drink op with no music insight. Well normal service is being resumed as I?m now going to do an op on the Mod Father - PaulWeller. Having been in the Jam and The Style Council, Paul decided to go Solo and after a whole host of albums in all these various Guises.
That brings us up to 2001 when PaulWeller decided to do a UK tour and instead of calling in a band to help him he basically set off with his guitar. The result of that tour was this album, which includes songs from his Jam, Style Council and solo artist days.
Well the band is quite self-explanatory, its PaulWeller on Guitar and Vocals and that?s pretty much it.

Advantages: Lyrically superb Disadvantages: He is misunderstood
I am a very big PaulWeller fan, so much so I even had his tunes playing instead of The Wedding March when I got married!! I love all of his CD's as I do not see any of the songs he makes as being weak which is not the norm for most artists, and 'Stanley Road' remains my all time favourite album.
In 1998, he released this album and called it very fittingly "Modern Classics", and it is a collection of his music from 1991-1998, and proves what we all know deep down, that he is one of the best songwriters we have ever seen, and he can certainly hold a tune or two!
Essentially as a fan of Weller, I tend to remember songs as they were played live, as I think studio recordings never give the songs what they deserve, whereas on stage, Weller lets rip, and the passion and genuine love for his music is evident for all to see.

Album Notes
Following swiftly on the heels of his 2004 covers album, AS IS NOW finds Paul Weller looking to various phases of his career for an assured and eclectic record. On this 2005 outing, the British "Modfather" largely downplays his love of soul in favor of 1960s-inspired pub-rock (the lively opener, "Blink and You'll Miss It") and folk-influenced tunes (the chiming "All on a Misty Morning"). Most notably, however, Weller revisits the edgy sound of his beloved punk group, the Jam, on the energetic "Come On/Let's Go" and the driving "From the Floorboards Up." Of course, no Weller solo album would be complete without a groove-laden tune, and here he offers up the self-explanatory "Bring Back the Funk (Pts 1 & 2)," which highlights the tight interplay of his band. While longtime fans have plenty to admire on AS IS NOW, this dynamic set also serves an excellent sampler of Weller's stylistic range for the uninitiated.
Album Reviews
Mojo (p.63) - Ranked #32 in Mojo's "The 50 Best Albums Of 2005" - "[A] career highlight....His best since WILDWOOD." Mojo (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 - "The most striking thing about it is the mood - a friskiness and lightness of touch, even a welcome touch of corniness and self-deprecation, that seems to have been missing in recent years."
