As Time Goes By
With at least four albums of unheard Carpenters material already released, you'd have

thought the well would surely be dry by now. Yet with As Time Goes By, Richard Carpenter digs up another batch of outtakes, demos and TV performances to delight the duo's legions of fans. A legendary perfectionist, he's eschewed the "warts and all" approach, and instead rearranged, remixed and often rerecorded the original backing tracks to lend that famous Carpenters smoothness to even the ropier TV efforts. Most interesting are the endearingly innocent garage versions of "Nowhere Man" and "California Dreamin'", recorded in 1967 when Karen was just 16, a sweet 1971 cover of Wildweeds' "And When He Smiles" and a pretty take on Kermit the Frog's classic "The Rainbow Connection". Elsewhere, there's a warm and loungey medley where Karen and Perry Como sing each other's songs, and a glorious duet with Ella Fitzgerald where "My Funny Valentine" and "Someone to Watch Over Me" are made to shine once more. Richard displays his keyboard virtuosity with "Dizzy Fingers" and a grand medley of sci-fi themes, and the only disappointment is a cover of "Dancing in the Street" where Karen fails to really capture the song's joyous mood. Despite this, it's a must for all fans of easy listening. --Dominic Wills
Advantages: It's Neil Diamond Disadvantages: He's Mr Un Cool
...on the Columbia record label, this album chronicles the very best of NeilDiamond. I’d be surprised if there isn’t a track or two that each and every one of you reading this are familiar with, whether you’ll admit to it or not, is a different matter.
Several of the tracks have a similarity to the earlier musical compositions of Billy Joel.... the soft background beats, and piano melodies, at times bare an almost uncanny resemblance. Billy Joel is widely accepted as a superb musical artist, you wouldn’t be ashamed of his album in your collection, yet NeilDiamond gets hidden behind that veil of embarrassment.... strange, but true.
It’s perhaps because Billy Joel moved on with his music, that he’s accepted. His style changed with the times, yet whether you listen to NeilDiamond’s 60’s or 90’s...

MitchellandAimeesMum
Advantages: Very easy listening Disadvantages: None
...The Jazz Singer is the album from NeilDiamond which was the soundtrack to the remake of "The Jazz Singer", originally done for the "big screen" by Al Jolson.
Released in November 1980 by Capitol and EMI it was then re-released in February 1996 on Columbia and Sony. The film actually didn't do very well in the box office but the soundtrack became one of NeilDiamond's best selling albums in the States by selling over 5 million albums.
Three of the songs from the soundtrack became top ten singles, "Love on the Rocks", "Hello Again" and "America".
The track listing is as follows:
"America" (NeilDiamond)
"Adan Olom"
"You Baby"
"Love On The Rocks" (Diamond/Gilbert Becaud)

Neil Finn at his best Review of7 Worlds Collide (Live At The St. James) - Neil Finnby
penpen
Advantages: Great Dvd, Super Performance Disadvantages: Not many features.
...Neil Finn was the songwritting force behind the very succesful "Crowded House", and played a massive part in the pop group "Split Enz". Neil Finn is now by himself, with a darker, and more eclectic sound. His first solo album (1998), "Try Whistling This", was a great success in Neil Finn's home Country (New Zealand).
Neil Finn has brought with him this time a selection of truely unique artists. Radiohead's Phil Selway(Drums), sebastian Steinberg (Bass), and from "The Smiths", Johnny Marr,(Electric Guitar). A great line up of musicians, making an overall great sound.
Neil Finn opens the gig with a great version of the Crowded House Classic " Fall at your Feet". Just an accoustic Guitar, a fantastic version. In with the selection of great Neil Finn songs, there is also a Performance by Neil Finn's son, Liam Finn, who is an up and coming...
