As Time Goes By
With at least four albums of unheard Carpenters material already released, you'd have

thought the well would surely be dry by now. Yet with As Time Goes By, Richard Carpenter digs up another batch of outtakes, demos and TV performances to delight the duo's legions of fans. A legendary perfectionist, he's eschewed the "warts and all" approach, and instead rearranged, remixed and often rerecorded the original backing tracks to lend that famous Carpenters smoothness to even the ropier TV efforts. Most interesting are the endearingly innocent garage versions of "Nowhere Man" and "California Dreamin'", recorded in 1967 when Karen was just 16, a sweet 1971 cover of Wildweeds' "And When He Smiles" and a pretty take on Kermit the Frog's classic "The Rainbow Connection". Elsewhere, there's a warm and loungey medley where Karen and Perry Como sing each other's songs, and a glorious duet with Ella Fitzgerald where "My Funny Valentine" and "Someone to Watch Over Me" are made to shine once more. Richard displays his keyboard virtuosity with "Dizzy Fingers" and a grand medley of sci-fi themes, and the only disappointment is a cover of "Dancing in the Street" where Karen fails to really capture the song's joyous mood. Despite this, it's a must for all fans of easy listening. --Dominic Wills
Advantages: Awesome playing and musicianship. Easy listening. Disadvantages: Perhaps not for the 'purist' folk music lover.
...In this, their first CD, RobyLakatos (violin) and hisEnsemble (consisting of piano, guitar, cymbalon, double bass, and another violin) take their listeners on an exhilarating journey through a variety of gypsy-inspired musical styles. Their flair, charm and sensitive musicianship are apparent from the first note to the last.
Described as the ‘nonconformist of the violin’, RobyLakatos was born into a family of Hungarian gypsy violin traditions dating back to the time of Beethoven! Being a nonconformist in every sense however, he has taken these traditions and moulded them to achieve his own unique musical voice. The incorporation of a guitar and piano into his gypsy ensemble for instance, are certainly not typical instruments of this genre.
This CD, entitled simply ‘Lakatos’, consists of 13 tracks (see below for track listing...

Advantages: Lots of contributions from music greats like Maddona and William Orbit Disadvantages: Can be a bit cheesy
...This is Ricky's first album to be sung completely in English and it is pretty good but honestly he's had better. There was the massive hit 'Livin' la vida loca' which has a certain magic like 'Maria' and 'La Copa De La Vida/The Cup of Life' as does 'I'm on my way', not surprising really as Robi Rosa and Desmond Child, the masterminds behind his earlier hits also wrote and produced many of the songs on the album. There are also contributions from songwriting legend Diane Warren, Jon Secada and even from from the don of latin music Emilio Estefan. He does an amazing duet with the first lady of pop Madonna, the track is called 'Be careful', also there is a duet with 'Its all about the money' Meja.
To stay true to his roots though there are a few songs on the album which have also been recorded in spanish but it just adds to the great...
