As Time Goes By
With at least four albums of unheard Carpenters material already released, you'd have

thought the well would surely be dry by now. Yet with As Time Goes By, Richard Carpenter digs up another batch of outtakes, demos and TV performances to delight the duo's legions of fans. A legendary perfectionist, he's eschewed the "warts and all" approach, and instead rearranged, remixed and often rerecorded the original backing tracks to lend that famous Carpenters smoothness to even the ropier TV efforts. Most interesting are the endearingly innocent garage versions of "Nowhere Man" and "California Dreamin'", recorded in 1967 when Karen was just 16, a sweet 1971 cover of Wildweeds' "And When He Smiles" and a pretty take on Kermit the Frog's classic "The Rainbow Connection". Elsewhere, there's a warm and loungey medley where Karen and Perry Como sing each other's songs, and a glorious duet with Ella Fitzgerald where "My Funny Valentine" and "Someone to Watch Over Me" are made to shine once more. Richard displays his keyboard virtuosity with "Dizzy Fingers" and a grand medley of sci-fi themes, and the only disappointment is a cover of "Dancing in the Street" where Karen fails to really capture the song's joyous mood. Despite this, it's a must for all fans of easy listening. --Dominic Wills
Advantages: Fits with the tone and style of the film Disadvantages: None
...The Garden State soundtrack is without a doubt one of the best soundtracks I've ever had the joy of listening to. It's the kind of soundtrack that even if you have not seen the film you will, in some way be able to relate to the songs that are on it. But with having seen the film, the songs will remind you of that particular scene in the film and you will feel personally connected with it.
Not every soundtrack achieves this and Zach Braff does a fantastic job at choosing the right songs for the right scenes. Each song fits perfectly with the tone, style, emotions, look & feel of the particular scene it is playing in.
The opening song "Don't Panic" by Coldplay ticks every box for being a fantastic opening song to start the film. It works in setting that low tempo, light and gentle start that you get with the movie. It really fits...

Advantages: MUSIC TO LIFT YOUR SOUL Disadvantages: THE GROUP HAVE SPLIT UP
...I will admit right from the very start that this is one of my favourite albums of all time (my favourite being the lead singer's only solo album). It is a 100% pure classic. Danny Wilson were a 1980's group from Scotland comprising of Gary and Kit Clark and Ged Grimes.
Their music was in a similar style to Deacon Blue, The Bible and Prefab Sprout. Most people will be familiar with their biggest hit which was "Mary's Prayer" a soulful tune about lost love. However the whole album is full of great songs which are a tribute to the song writers are.
The tracks are:
1. Davy
2. Mary's Prayer
3. Lorraine Parade
4. Aberdeen
5. Nothing Ever Goes To Plan
6. Broken China
7. Steamtrains To The Milkyway
8. Spencer Tracey
9. You Remain An Angel
10. Ruby's Golden Wedding
11. Girl I Used To Know
12. Five Friendly Aliens
13. I Won't Be Here When You Get...

Advantages: First Half has the potential Indie classics you would expect from the Kaisers Disadvantages: Let Down in the last third, Like Middlesbrough F.C.
...Great opening track, very sing-a-long and karaoke classic in years to come in Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Do Ya, Do Ya, Do Ya, Do Ya.
Is Employment followable? On first listen i would have to say no, but, and this is a big but, listen to it a 2nd time and it is a completely different album, you get mislead into thinking it's a run of the mill album, but it is clearly not so.
Starting with a good opener is always a good plan in my idea, and in this case following with The Angry Mob is a master stroke as it has 3 or 4 sounds mixed in and all trying to take claim to own the song, but this is done very well and sounds awesome. Heat Dies Down is a fast paced song which will get you up, and is swiftly followed by High Royds which initially annoyed the teeth out of me, and as with the others it has grown on me and i can't seem to get the song...
