--------------Intro---------------
Otep is a rock/metal band, signed with KOCH after a fight with Capitol, theire old label. The band consists of 4 members, and is named after the singer and mainfunder, Otep Shamaya. The rest of of the bandmembers: * Otep Shamaya - Vocals * "Evil" J. McGuire - Bass Guitar, Backup Vocals * Karma Singh Cheema - Guitars (studio) * Brian Wolff - Drums. -------------------The CD, number by number ------------- ~~!! Note: Lyrics wage strong in my ratings, so don't be surprised to see 10/10s !!~~
1. "Eat The Children" - 3:47 ~ 8/10 The track starts of calm, singing a childrens song, with her really remarkable voice, and after not too long her anger bursts free, empowered by the feelable anger coming from inside her. "'Cus I am vermin I'm the anti-christ just another lonely chapter in the book of lies" I personally am not too easily impressed, but she has a way of using her words.
2. "Crooked Spoons" - 4:03 ~ 6.5/10 The lyrics grap me, this song is about how she got deceived
by even the church, the music is okay, the lyrics are good, but it feels a little off at some times. "The venom that slips from your lips, A tiny lie shining in your eyes Pain in my veins, Shallow, hollow, incarcerated soul"
3. "Perfectly Flawed" - 3:54 ~ 8.5/10 Calm song, compared to how she can be, the supporting music feels good though, you do not feel a forced calmness, it comes in really natural, and its a good idea to put this after track 2. The lyrics are good. "A disguise of self deception Hides my secrets perfectly I'm rejecting my reflection Cause I hate the way it judges me"
4. "Confrontation" - 3:30 ~ 8/10 A political song, because Otep will die before not speaking her mind, the music is enjoyable, the song flows awesomely, and you can hear a slight anger in her voice, and the lyrics don't show a different picture. "More deception and greed More wars and disease More lies from the high mind That seek to deceive"
5. "Milk Of Regret" - 6:00 ~ 10/10 I know people are not always waiting for lyrics, but you can feel her bitter intense pain so well, and the hate for her parents. Her father tried to prevent her birth by kicking the mother into the stomach during the pregnancy, but she survived, and after being born her mother did nothing to defend her from her father, which is also why she hates her mother aswell. The song is alright, but the lyrics cut in:
"Was I your revenge?... ( to her mother )
...I wish I was afraid of suicide... ( to both )
...I just can't forget The blood, The stitches, The bite marks, The kisses... ( to her father )
...I'm starving for affection Your heart is made of ash... ( to her mother )
...I might be going down in flames, But you will burn with me... ( To her father )
...Waiting for you to notice me, I was so naive I refused to feed, waiting for you LIKE A LOVESICK ANOREXIC... ( to her mother )
...I hope you drown in this shit milk or regret I WON'T FUCKING FORGET I hope you drown while you're world is burning down..." ( to her mother)
Just a selection of the lyrics, and I have never felt somebodies emotions through a song as well as now, this song truely reaches me, and the backing music is also awesome, definate 10/10
6. "Noose & Nail" - 3:40 ~ 7/10 Against religions, again, has a way with her words, feeling her emotions. The music is alright, but the lyrics are more impressive: "Jesus needs his prescriptions filled Buddah's using too many pills Allah promises endless thrills in volatile bottles marked Religion Kills
Krishna's rollin' on ecstasy Jehovah's smokin' too much PCP Mother Mary carries a junkie messiah Shooting smack & smokin' crack with the King of Liars
This is for a lifetime of shit
You!
Get down and crawl!"
7. "Ghostflowers" - 4:24 7.5/10 You can feel her anger extremly well, the music is awesome, and the backing up lyrics are also quite good. "Was I just a poor decision?"
8. "Breed" (Nirvana cover) - 3:29 ~ 6.5/10 This song is a cover of Nirvanas "Breed", and I must say, its a quite good cover, but sometimes she adjusts her voice too much to sound like Kurt Cobain did, which kind of wrecks her unique sound. I can not give her credit for these lyrics, that leaves a song that is okay, but not medal worthy, about a 6.
9. "March Of The Martyrs" - 4:16 ~ 9/10 Intense singing, the music really really rocks in this track, and again, I like the lyrics, and how they are combined with the music. "I will suffer so you don't ( she defended her mom and jumped between often ) like a human sacrifice, I pay the price... ....I'm burning & bleeding The parasites are feeding..."
10. "Invisible" - 5:25 ~ 6.5/10 The music is okay, the combination is okay, and the lyrics are not THAT good. "You're so lovely when you cry. You're so perfect when you lie. You can be my crucifix, Hold me up to watch me die."
11. "Home Grown" - 4:20 ~ 10/10 The music is good, the singing is good, the lyrics are gripping. "Roaches and cigarettes, A sink of hungry dishes. Flies in the afterbirth, I miss you when you're timid.
Loving you is nothing new, It's self mutilation. I crave the pain, I'm so ashamed...
...Welcome to the family This drug addict, Sex fanatic, Alcoholic fantasy.
I fell down some stairs... I ran into a wall... He hurts me 'cause he cares.. It's all my fault! It's all your fault!!!!!!
Fuck you, You insecure piece of shit.
FUCK YOU!!!
If you TOUCH US AGAIN I will FUCKING KILL YOU!...."
12. "Communion" - 4:26 ~ 6/10 Not too special, the music is okay, but the singing annoys me, because there has been toyed with. the lyrics don't get me excited either, mediocre.
13. "Andrenochrome Dreams [Hidden Track]" - 9:56 ~ 7/10 Vague track, vague lyrics, but a cool way to end an album, and the vague lyrics are well written, musical support is nearly gone.
------------------Conclusion------------
Her pain is feelable and hearable, and from time to time cuts in deep, and in my case I can also feel it even better, because I can relate to what happened to her, here is my grade for the CD:
102.5/130, kind of feel it coming, a good grade, but I wll put it on the 10 scale, so that would be a 7.9/10. Lets make it 8/10.
Recommended to everyone that listens to lyrics and is not intimidated by a powerfull female vocalist.
Oh, and the picture on the albumcover is also awesome, and gives me an image of what I am getting myself into, the design rocks.

Great review! Heard a few otep songs which I really enjoyed, will definitly have to check out this album. Some quality lyrics there, don't see how anyone could bad mouth them. A review that's well deserving of an E rating!
