Ashanti is still one of the biggest names in R&B today and 4 albums later has arguably been able to top her first. The eponymous debut combines sultry slowjams with the odd upbeat club track. Best remember for her collaborations with Ja'Rule in her early days, it was almost inevitable therefore that one of the standout tracks of her debut album would be a collaboration with, yes, that man - the gravel-voiced 'Ja'. Leaving (Always on Time Part 2) is my personal favourite and was never released as a full single which is to it's advantage as it has stood the test of time and not fallen into the same trap as Foolish as being incredibly overplayed on the airwaves. I simply cannot write a review of this album without mentioning Foolish in more depth. A radio stations best friend, it's classy yet accessible and there's no doubt that it would be the critics choice for best track. The flagship tune, the record that sold the album for many. Lyrically it is one of the better tracks, if you can ignore the incredible overuse of the word 'baby' in Ashanti's tracks you are on the right path to enjoyment. Until this was pointed out to me I was blisfully unaware, but just listen to how many times that one word is used in each and every one of her tracks.
If you wanted to mention hidden gems, my personal preference would be to talk about 'Dreams'. The closing track of the album is wonderfully charming and features an intro section with children stating their dreams and ambitions to a backing of a gorgeous accoustic melody. Overall prodction of the album is crisp as you like and the tracks definitely stand the test of time.
