While it's tempting to position Elbow next to the sardonic likes of Badly Drawn ... more
Boy--mainly because of their proximity to the city of Manchester and their way with an acoustic guitar--Asleep in the Back, their frighteningly competent debut album, bears not the joker's smile. Instead, it comes straight from Manchester's simmering, ugly dark side--11 tracks of rain-sodden misery, blown up into the breed of gracefully elegiac fatalism that once formed the essence of the likes of Joy Division. The foggy psychedelic swirl and sewer-deep dub basslines might recall the prog-rock indulgences of Radiohead, but Elbow's grievances are unmistakably aired from the far end of a dole queue; "Any Day Now" veritably fidgets with small town frustration, lead singer Guy Garvey--a man with the voice of an angel and the face of a brickie--hissing "Any day now/ How's about getting out of this place/ Anyways?" over and over, a mantra of desperation. Should we take it as a given that Elbow will break out of this rut of depression and despair?Asleep in the Backis good enough to suggest so. But then,Asleep in the Backalso knows that fate can be awfully cruel.--Louis Pattison

Advantages: You don't want to skip any tracks. A hypnotic, cleverly written CD, half of the songs exceed 5mins but it anything but hard to listen to. Disadvantages: it has a m..m..m..m..m..m..m..m..m..m...stammer in the middle..(well mine does because it got scrached...) other than that....disadvantage??? hmmm nope...
provolks your thoughts and although repetitive, does not get annoying. Guys Voice through much of it remains in the back seat, letting the music take controll, untill it comes to "New Born" where he may become comparable to Coldplay's Chris Martin.
"Bitten by the Tailfly" Shows the bands nastier side, showing that they arenot a bunch of hopeless romantics, Guy almost Speaks through:
"You're a girl in this vicinity - I'm a dog without a collar on - This cattle-market cabaret -Is the Sabbath every Saturday."
A tribal drumming is used throughout...and the background speaking gives it a sence of realism...the sog ends on people talking as in a club i think, with a piano playing in the background...Brilliant....
Towards the end, the CD quietens up quite alot especially from "din't mix your drinks"
Elbow know how to make a good CD ...
Advantages: Strong songs from beginning to end Disadvantages: Not for those looking for cheery pop.
Signed to the V2 label, home of the Stereophonics, Elbow are spearheading their New Acoustic Movement. Yes I?m reviewing NAM bands again?
Here?s one of those music phrases that brings journalists all over the country out in a cold sweat. "Elbow sound like Radiohead" I?m not saying they do you understand, but if I had to compare them to anyone I?d have to say them or the Doves. The Doves is probably the better of the two, since Elbow and The Doves both hail from Greater Manchester and both have that solemn anthemic quality to their songs. Elbow the most famous Bury band, well one day?
"AsleepIn The Back" is their debut album, which is out this month. After 10 years of trying, being dumped by Island and EMI, I think it?s a shame we?ve had to wait so long for this. Though now couldn?t be a more perfect time, fitting in ...
Advantages: A superb melodic debut album Disadvantages: Takes a while to get into
In 2001 a year after Doves debut album Lost Souls another Manchester band appeared on the Scene. Friends with Doves Guy Garvey and the rest of Elbow released this their debut album Asleepin the Back. Guy who is almost a spitting image of Johnny Vegas at the moment is a superb songwriter and this is proven during this album.
Although the tracks are a little on the long side but they are all superb songs with a relaxing undertone. With the release of the follow up album last week I thought it only right I do this one first before moving onto the better album. The band have grown in stature over the years but instead of rabitting on about that I'll actually get on and tell you about the band and this album.

Album Notes
Elbow: Guy Garvey (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, synthesizer, percussion, sound effects); Mark Potter (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Craig Potter (piano, organ, synthesizer, background vocals); Pete Turner (synthesizer, bass, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Ian Burdge (cello); Francoise Lemoignan (saxophone); Bob Sastri, Nick Coen (brass); Danny Evans (percussion, loops); Ben Hillier (percussion, background vocals). Producers: Danny Evans, Elbow, Ben Hillier, Steve Osborne. Engineers include: Danny Evans, Steve Lloyd, Danton Supple. England's Elbow has been labeled as nouveau prog-rock, but Pink Floyd rarely sounded this radio-friendly. With tracks built on soaring vocals, shimmering guitars, spooky strings, and trance-inducing beats, the group falls more accurately between morose modern balladeers such as Coldplay and Travis and experimental sonic soldiers like Radiohead and early Genesis. They've described their sound as "prog without the solos," which also doesn't do justice to their full-length debut, ASLEEP IN THE BACK, by half. The album is a subtly shifting series of dreamy pop songs with emotionally tortured lyrics. With a voice that veers between the keening falsettos of Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Dave Matthews' raspier end, Garvey mostly hovers over the album's skeletal, floating arrangements. He almost gets lost in the swell of "Newborn," while achieving a hypnotizing strength with the double- and triple-tracked vocals of "Any Day Now," and nearly whispering himself out of the picture on the Floydian "Bitten by the Tailfly." Most of the arrangements hover around the mid-tempo range and the group is not afraid to stretch well past the five-minute mark, allowing the songs to slowly unfold at their leisure.

Spin (3/02, pp.127-128) - 6 out of 10 - "...the expansive, leisurely songs...swoon nicely. And they've all got splendid little moments..." Entertainment Weekly (3/29/02, p.71-72) - "...a full hour of dense, moody gloss..." - Rating: B- Magnet (12-1/02, p.83) - "...Really progressive music....succeeding in its ambition to create complex rock and making it interesting..." Alternative Press (3/02, pp.76-7) - 8 out of 10 - "...A severely affected and emotionally overloaded debut that rocks, moans, emotes, shivers, blares, confounds and (mildly) innovates..."
