the world at large take notice. The interaction of a volatile prison population starved for entertainment and a desperately on-form Johnny Cash was electrifying: his somber machismo finally found a home. The songs, which included every prison song Cash knew ("I Got Stripes", "The Wall", "25 Minutes to Go", "Cocaine Blues", plus his own "Folsom Prison Blues"), were tailored to galvanise the crowd. This set is all about atmosphere. Live at the Grand Ole Opry this ain't. The current version has been coupled with its de facto sequel, recorded three years later at San Quentin and nearly Folsom's match. -- Colin Escott

Cash's bas baritone is also in fine form throughout the recording which is especially good on the very soulful rendition of "The Green Green Grass Of Home"

Advantages: You feel like you're there Disadvantages: Should be listen to in full
Is the amazing why this CD opens. Its relaxing choice of songs, that fact that its done live and has Johnnys links into the songs makes it all seems as though Johnny is actually doing a performance for you.
There's a nice banter between inmates and Johnny Cash, it makes you realise that he was once an inmate, and that he's been in the position of the audience, he knows how the feel. You can tell they share this bond through the recording, through ... ...inmates react to lyrics and links. I think the fact that it has some songs on there that arent well known, and i think a couple that werent released but dont hold me to that!! All add to the feel of the CD, you might complain that it doesnt have some of his classics on there, but i think taking into consideration the venue, audience it couldn't have been a better line up. A reasonably relaxing CD, great for listening to in the casr when you stuck ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "At Folsom Prison - Johnny Cash"
The first cd in this double collection is JohnnyCash At FolsomPrison.
It was recorded in 1968 (well before i was born). This was the time of Presidential Abdication, The Vietnam War and the continuing Civil Rights struggle. It was also the same year Mr. JohnnyCash married Miss June Carter, his saviour. This cd really opened my eyes to what life was like "back in the day". With 19 great songs including "FolsomPrison Blues", "Cocaine Blues" and the fantastic "Jackson" a duet with June. There had never been a recording session quite like this one which produced this album. The songs on the cd's:-
1 Folsomprison blues
2 Busted
3 Dark as the dungeon
4 I still miss someone
5 Cocaine Blues
6 25 minutes to go
7 Orange Blossom Blues
8 The long Black Veil
9 Send a picture of Mother
10 The wall
11 Dirty old egg-suckin' dog
12 ...
Advantages: Classic , fresh , raw , entertaining , a little piece of history . Disadvantages: May be too dated for some .
made Cash known to a far larger audience than ever before. The humour of this song, as a brand new effort , went down a storm at San Quentin. It may sound corny now but it was fresh and different then.
Track Twelve - (There?ll Be) Peace in the Valley.
This is one of my favourite JohnnyCash recordings. It almost has the feel of a church hymn. The varying voices of Cash and the female singers are so restful that they must have been appealing to the prisoners serving life-sentences.
Track Thirteen - FolsomPrison Blues *
After Boos for the warden JohnnyCash?s ?Ah you don?t really mean that? hit?s the spot. Folsomprison blues gives Cash a chance at the start to introduce all the band members, before it storms into full swing. It is a light-hearted quick paced track on a heavy subject and is a foot tapping tune.
Track Fourteen ...
Advantages: Sombre, poignant, affecting Disadvantages: Couple of right royal stinkers
with "a big iron on his hip" and again the storytelling in once again top notch. Can't help thinking that this album would have been near perfect with the omission of We'll Meet Again and Danny Boy, though.
OVERALL
---------------
A very sad, affecting album made all the more so by the fact that poor Johnny knew he was dying when he recorded this album. Rarely is there a drumbeat or anything electronic involved here, it's mainly cellos and other strings and acoustic and steel guitars everywhere. He sounds tired, but experienced, and soulful in maudlin, weary kind of way.
Of course, this isn't an album for everyone and - like your grandad on her deathbed - you may not wish to visit it and just remember him as he used to be. In which case, check out these JohnnyCash classics:

Album Notes
Want to hear part of the reason why Johnny Cash is an icon, a singer respected and influential in country, folk, and rock & roll? THIS is it! In 1968--one of the most tumultuous years in American history since the Depression years--Cash recorded an album live in front of a (literally) captive (but wildly appreciative) audience, in Folsom Prison. With two guitars, bass, drums, and a small vocal group (including Cash's wife June Carter Cash and the Statler Brothers), Cash sings his hits and lesser-known songs ("Send a Picture of Mother") and some haunting country standards ("Dark as a Dungeon"), as well as songs about REAL outlaws ("Cocaine Blues") to a rapt audience that hangs on every word. That boom-chicka-boom sound is sharp as the first mean wind of winter, and Cash is in fine fettle (though his voice cracks from time to time). With its unique setting, this is as harrowing an album as any ever recorded.
