Indeed, he could be considered one of the finest white soul singers of his generation.Of course, his 1980s heyday is well represented here. "Addicted to Love" is a stand-out, alongside such hits as "Some Guys Have All the Luck", "Simply Irresistible" and "Some Like It Hot", the big hit he shared with Duran Duran's John and Andy Taylor as the Power Station. But fans will also enjoy the disco stylings of 1978's "Every Kinda People" (written by Free's Andy Fraser), the swampy funk of 1974's "Sneakin' Sally Thru the Alley" and a minimalistic but driving cover of ZZ Top's hilariously dumb "TV Dinners". This last track is a telling choice. Though Palmer is a serious student of music, he has always exhibited a gratifying sense of humour, a quality that's contributed mightily to his long-standing success. Advantages: superb, timeless songs Disadvantages: no more recordings / performances from Redding
...A great party record, this one - plenty of cracking dance tunes, and a decent quota of slow tunes for later on.
It's also some of the best quality soul music ever produced, and all of it produced during a very short period of time - during the mid-60s, until Redding died in a plane crash in 1967, aged just 26.
Redding himself wrote many of the songs, songs as good as:
# "These arms of mine" - his first single to chart, in 1963, it's a simple ballad, almost 50s crooner style. It's just a love song, about a guy pleading to his girl, but oh so persuasive.
# "Respect" - Aretha Franklin recorded the definitive version, but it's definitely worth hearing the Otis original.
# "Love man" - It might sound like a macho boast but I'm not so sure. When Otis stammers "cau cau cau cause I'm a love man" it sounds more like a man who...

Advantages: A selection of 20 really well put together songs Disadvantages: Its a hard one. Some would say not enough duets.

Each track on the album has a different feel to it, and there are a couple of songs, from his album Ten Good Reasons, that didn't make it to the 20 chosen. That would only be a disadvantage because you have to shortlist a maximum of about 25 to choose most from to get onto a VeryBest Of album in the first place.
I would only recommend this album to those who like listening to Kylie Minogue, as his style was very similar to that of her in the late 1980's....
